General Accountant

Classification: RSSSA Reports To: Accounting Supervisor Supervises: None Position Goal: To assist with the fiscal processes for various departments and to maintain procedures that will insure the accounting functions of the Reading School District Department will be performed in accordance with all Federal, State, Child Nutrition, GAAP and GASB guidelines and requirements.

Qualifications: Associate's Degree in Accounting or Business with 7 years of directly relevant experience, or a Bachelor's Degree with 5 years of directly relevant experience. Greater consideration will be given to candidates with prior school business office experience. Must have excellent communication skills (verbal and written) and well developed interpersonal skills to successfully work with other departments/functions. Proficiency in the use and application of technology, including Excel and Word is required. Experience with PowerSchool eFinance Financial Software is preferred but not required. Must have the ability to work additional/extended hours on as needed/required basis during busy periods of the year.

Essential Functions: The essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to the following fundamental duties:

  • Accounting Functions
    • Maintain the chart of accounts to properly classify expenditures in accordance with the state reporting requirements
    • Create new accounts as needed and directed
    • Reconcile General Ledger accounts as assigned
    • Assist with the preparation and filing of state financial reports
    • Review and analyze actual versus budget variances for various departments
    • Assist with managing all cash receipts
    • Assist with specific projects and assignments that arise
    • Maintain adequate records of activities for review and testing by local and state auditors
    • Perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or his/her designee
  • Food Service Functions
    • Assist in preparation/submission of annual Child Nutrition Financial report to PDE
    • Record monthly PDE (SNP) and Summer Feeding (SSO) claim reimbursements
    • Assist with the posting of accounts payable for processing
    • Review and approve accounts receivable invoices and interface with general ledger
    • Calculate and post journal entries for inventory, revenues and expenses
    • Assist with reconciling cash accounts
    • Prepare financial reports for the Director of Food Service
    • Assist with the preparation of the Food Service budget
    • Gather information for the PA Department of Education and local auditors

  • Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common professional and technical journals, business periodicals, financial reports, governmental regulations and legal documents, which are often of a complex nature Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from the public, staff, regulatory agencies, or members of the community Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals Ability to effectively present information, to individuals and/or groups, in both written and oral form, and respond to questions and concerns from management, professional and support staff, union representatives, public groups, federal, state and local government agencies, and the Board of School Directors
  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to define and analyze problems of a complex nature, collect data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, and implement and evaluate success of solutions Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical form
  • Other: Ability to apply knowledge of current research and best practices in educational administration, accounting and management of business affairs Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks and make critical-work related decisions often times under tight deadlines Ability to interact in an effective and professional manner with other departments and work in a collaborative manne

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license is preferred but not required

Terms of Employment: Full-time (12-month) non-exempt position. Salary and benefits consistent with the District's approved Compensation and Benefits Plan.
