Dr. Kinzie invites applications for The General Chemistry Workshop Leader position for Fall 2025. The times available for hire are CHM 007 B1 M 1610-1735; CHM 007 B2 M 1740-1905; CHM 007 B3 T 1610-1735; CHM 007 C1 M 1740-1905; CHM 007 C2 M 1910-2035 and CHM 007 C3 T 1740-1905. Please indicate your availability and order of preference for these times in your cover letter.

The workshop leader will facilitate a workshop section conducted through Peer-Led Team Learning. The workshop leader is also responsible for preparing for the workshop activity so they can assist students as they complete the activity in groups and attending a weekly meeting with Dr. Kinzie.

The approximate hours will be 2.5 per week (~32 hours each semester) and the pay rate is $16.80 per hour for the 2025-26 academic year. The course instructor will inform the workshop leader of performance successes and deficiencies (if any). A workshop leader who is not meeting communicated expectations may be dismissed and replaced with another qualified applicant any time during the semester for which they are hired.

Core Duties

The workshop leader for CHM 007 has these responsibilities:

  • Facilitate a workshop in which students work through an activity provided by the instructor.
  • Answer student questions related to the activity and underlying chemistry concepts.
  • Actively guide students through problem solving and concept discussions.
  • Grade homework assignments as detailed by the instructor.
  • Other relevant duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Job requirements for workshop leader include:

  • Successful completion of CHM 207 and 208 with a grade of B or higher
  • A commitment to help the students with the material and to facilitate discussion, accompanied by a determination to avoid telling students everything they need to do!
  • A sound knowledge of course material and concepts
  • A commitment to regular communication of student progress to course instructor
  • Demonstration of excellent communication and leadership skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Successful completion of CHM 207 and CHM 208 with a grade of B or higher
  • Majoring in biology or chemistry
  • Demonstration of excellent communication and leadership skills
