Position Summary

The General Foreman will be responsible for supervising multiple crews, ensuring safety compliance, managing resources, and maintaining quality standards while meeting project deadlines and budget requirements. This role serves as the critical link betweenproject management and field operations.

Key Responsibilities

Supervision and Leadership
  • Supervise and coordinate multiple construction crews and trade workers across various project activities
  • Assign daily tasks and responsibilities to crew members based on project priorities and schedules
  • Train, mentor, and evaluate performance of workers and tradespeople
  • Conduct regular team meetings to communicate project goals, safety requirements, and schedule updates
  • Resolve personnel conflicts and maintain positive working relationships among crew members
Project Coordination and Planning
  • Review and interpret construction plans, blueprints, specifications, and project schedules
  • Coordinate tasks according to project priorities, timelines, and resource availability
  • Develop and maintain crew work schedules and monitor attendance
  • Plan and coordinate material deliveries and equipment mobilization to ensure resources are available when needed
  • Collaborate with project managers, engineers, superintendents, and other stakeholders on project requirements
  • Conduct site inspections to evaluate progress, compliance with plans, and quality of work
Safety and Quality Management
  • Enforce all company safety policies, OSHA regulations, and quality standards on the job site
  • Conduct daily safety briefings and ensure all crew members use proper personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Perform regular safety inspections and risk assessments to identify and mitigate hazards
  • Investigate incidents and accidents, complete required documentation, and implement corrective actions
  • Ensure all work meets project specifications, building codes, and quality standards
  • Address and resolve quality issues promptly to prevent rework
Equipment and Resource Management
  • Supervise the use, maintenance, and safe operation of construction machinery and equipment
  • Conduct regular equipment inspections and schedule maintenance as needed
  • Ensure proper handling and storage of materials on site
  • Monitor inventory levels and coordinate with procurement for material needs
  • Optimize equipment utilization to maximize efficiency and minimize costs
Administrative Duties
  • Prepare and submit daily progress reports, time sheets, and equipment logs
  • Monitor project expenditures and ensure work remains within budget constraints
  • Maintain accurate records of workforce hours, materials used, and equipment operation
  • Document project changes, delays, and site conditions
  • Communicate project status, issues, and concerns to project managers and stakeholders
  • Process change orders and maintain documentation for contract modifications
Problem Resolution
  • Identify and resolve operational problems quickly and effectively
  • Make on-site decisions to keep projects moving forward
  • Coordinate with subcontractors and vendors to address issues
  • Implement solutions that minimize project delays and cost overruns
Required Qualifications

Education
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent required
  • Vocational or technical training in construction, carpentry, or related trade preferred
  • Completion of formal construction management or supervision training is a plus
  • OSHA 30-Hour Construction Safety certification required (or ability to obtain within 90 days)
Experience
  • Minimum 5-8 years of experience in construction or related field
  • At least 2-3 years of supervisory experience, including crew leadership or lead worker roles
  • Proven track record of successfully managing multiple crews and complex projects
  • Experience with various construction methods, materials, and techniques
  • Demonstrated knowledge of construction equipment operation and maintenance
Skills and Competencies
  • Strong leadership and team management abilities
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, specifications, and technical documents
  • Thorough understanding of construction safety regulations and best practices
  • Proficiency in project scheduling and resource planning
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple priorities
  • Basic computer skills including email, scheduling software, and reporting systems
  • Strong organizational and time management abilities
  • Knowledge of budget management and cost control principles
Certifications and Licenses
  • Valid driver's license required
  • OSHA 30-Hour Construction Safety certification (required)
  • First Aid/CPR certification (preferred)
  • Trade-specific certifications or licenses as applicable (electrical, plumbing, etc.)
  • Forklift or equipment operation certifications as needed
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions
  • Capable of walking, standing, climbing, and working at heights for extended periods
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly
  • Visual acuity to read plans and inspect work quality
  • Physical stamina to work 8-10 hour shifts, with occasional overtime and weekend work
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (hard hat, safety glasses, steel-toed boots, etc.)
Working Conditions
  • Primarily outdoor work environment at active construction sites
  • Exposure to noise, dust, weather elements, and construction hazards
  • Work schedule typically follows standard construction hours with flexibility for project demands
  • May require travel to multiple job sites within the region
  • Occasional overtime, weekend, and holiday work may be required to meet project deadlines
