Position Summary
The Construction Laborer performs a variety of physical tasks on highway and heavy construction projects. Duties include site preparation, manual labor, operation of hand and power tools, and assistance with grading, paving, excavation, and material handling. The role requires following all safety procedures to protect both workers and the public, maintaining clean and hazard-free jobsites, and working in coordination with equipment operators and other crew members.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
• Perform manual labor for highway and heavy construction projects, including digging holes, trenches, and ditches, mixing concrete, and setting braces to support excavations. • Shovel bituminous concrete and asphalt in designated areas. • Fine grade fill to specified grades as directed by the foreman. • Assist with patching asphalt using hot and cold mix. • Excavate and fill trenches and ditches. • Maintain a clean and organized jobsite, securing tools and equipment daily to prevent hazards. • Handle and store materials safely. • Load and unload trucks, haul, and hoist materials. • Signal equipment operators to assist with machine alignment, movement, and adjustments. • Follows safety and incident reporting procedures, alerting the Foreman, Safety Director, or HR Manager of any hazards or issues.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
• Basic knowledge of tools, equipment, materials, and supplies used in heavy highway construction. • Knowledge of basic first aid and applicable safety precautions. • Ability to work independently and complete tasks according to schedule. • Physical ability to lift heavy objects, stand for long periods, and perform strenuous work in adverse conditions. • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. • Skill in using tools and equipment properly and safely. • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions. • Dependable attendance and consistency in meeting work schedules.
Work Environment & Physical Demands
• Regularly work near moving mechanical parts and outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, humidity, rain, and cold. • Frequent lifting, pushing, pulling, or carrying of objects requires good manual dexterity, multi-limb coordination, and the ability to move quickly. • Noise levels are generally loud. • High stamina and endurance are required for repetitive and physically demanding tasks.
