General Maintenance

Position: General Maintenance

Currently: Days and hours as needed, currently 8 hours per day, 260 days per year

Reports to: Director of Operations or designee

Salary Range: Currently $22.32 per hour - $27.12 per hour; There will be a rate

increase on July 1, 2026

Qualifications:

• Must be a minimum of 18 years of age.
• High School diploma or equivalent.
• Valid Ohio driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
• Demonstrated competence for assigned responsibilities.
• Industrial or institutional experience in facilities maintenance preferred.
• Valid boiler license where required.
• Certification of good health signed by a licensed physician.
• Residence in the taxing district of Alliance City Schools is preferred.
• Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable

Performance Responsibilities & Job Functions:

• Keeps building and premises, including sidewalks, driveways clean and safe at all times.
• Maintains the highest standard for safety and cleanliness while performing the duties according to all Federal, State, Local and Administrative guidelines and regulations.
• Shovels, plows, and/or salts walks, driveways, parking areas and steps as needed to ensure safety.
• Conducts an ongoing program of general maintenance, upkeep, and repair on all District buildings, systems, grounds, equipment and furniture as needed.
• Keeps all District vehicles, tools and equipment clean, safe and in maximum operating condition.
• Moves and/or transports supplies, materials or equipment as necessary within and outside of the District
• Maintains all District grounds and landscaping and keeps them free of rubbish.
• Installs, maintains and lines all District athletic fields.
• Performs such yard keeping chores as grass cutting, tree trimming, and the like, as necessary to maintain the school grounds in a safe and attractive condition.
• Help keep all District buildings and grounds in a clean and attractive condition and in a good state of repair.
• Reports all necessary major repairs, damage or vandalism immediately to the Director of Operations or designee.
• Obeys all traffic laws and report all work related accidents or injuries to the Director of Operations or designee immediately.
• Immediately report any change in your driver's license status to the Director of Operations
• Assumes responsibility for the opening and closing of District buildings and ensuring that all doors and windows are secured, and all lights, except those left on for safety reasons are turned off.
• Helps insure safety by making sure all exterior doors and windows remain closed and secured throughout the day at all District buildings.
• Keeps an inventory of supplies, equipment, and fuel on hand and requisitions such needed replacements far enough in advance so that they may be delivered in such time as will not hinder the custodian in his duties.
• Moves furniture, equipment or other supplies as required for various activities and as directed.
• Complies with Federal, State and Local laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of trash, rubbish and waste.
• Conducts periodic inspections of all electrical, plumbing, and hvac systems and where possible make needed repairs.
• Empty and dispose of contents of all waste baskets on a daily basis.
• Assist in setting up and tearing down after District events when necessary.
• Responsible for lubricating, oiling, adjusting, servicing and providing regular preventative maintenance on all District systems and equipment.
• Inspect District roofs on a regular basis to insure that all drains are open and that the roofs are in good repair and free of debris.
• If required check the building on weekends and holidays to insure that proper heat is being maintained, that all necessary equipment is functioning properly and that the building has not been vandalized.
• Assume responsibility for the general fire safety of all District buildings.
• Perform emergency repair or cleaning service as necessary or directed.
• Where possible repair broken furniture and equipment as needed.
• Keep all equipment and tools clean and at maximum operating efficiency.
• Requests materials, parts and supplies needed from the Director of Operations or designee.
• Assist in purchasing materials, supplies, tools or equipment as directed by the Director of Operations.
• Maintain a friendly helpful attitude toward students, employees and the public
• Never leave in an emergency situation without specific authorization from the Director of Operations.
• Responds to emergency calls on any day at any hour.
• Maintains preventative maintenance schedules established by the District as well as those required by Federal, State or Local regulations.
• Substitute for building custodians, food service driver, shipping clerk or delivery driver during emergencies or absenteeism.
• Utilize and update the maintenance work order list on a regular if not daily basis.
• Clean the interior and exterior of the assigned vehicle at least once per month and more frequently if necessary.
• Keep all maintenance areas clean and orderly to help ensure a safe and healthy work environment.

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

• Attend meetings and in-services as required by Board Policy, the Superintendent or designee, or the State Department of Education.
• Ensure the safety of the students and report any safety concern, confrontation, complication or conflict immediately to the Director of Operations.
• Follow all district policies and procedures as defined in the employee code of conduct and negotiated agreements.
• Interacts in a positive manner with staff, students, parents and the public.
• Maintain respect at all times for confidential information
• Make contacts with the public with tact and diplomacy
• Promote good public relations by personal appearance, attitude and conversation
• Access and respond to e-mails on a daily basis
• Respond to routine questions and requests in an appropriate manner
• Serve as a role model for students in how to conduct themselves as citizens and as responsible, intelligent human beings
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Operations, Superintendent or designee.

• Frequent requirement to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, see (ability to see color), read, speak, reach, stretch with hands and arms, crouch, climb, kneel, and stoop
• Frequent requirement to lift, carry, push, and pull various items up to a maximum of 100 pounds and 500 pounds (on wheels)
• Occasional exposure to fumes, airborne particles or dangerous chemicals
• Occasional operation of a vehicles under normal and inclement weather conditions
• Occasional requirement to travel, e.g., to meetings, etc.
• Occasional evening/weekend/summer work
• Occasional requirement to work overtime

Occasional exposure to extreme heat and cold
