    Evaluation: Evaluated annually by the building principal/immediate supervisor in accordance with WV State Code §18A-2-12, WV State Board Policy 5314.

    FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt

    QUALIFICTIONS:

    • High School Diploma, General Equivalent Development Certificate (GED) per West Virginia Code §18A-2-5
    • Personnel must be or have been classified in this category or must pass the state prescribed exam for this position per West Virginia Code §18A-4-8e.
    • Criminal background check per WV Code §18-5-15c.

    Title:

    General Maintenance Worker means a person employed as a helper to skilled maintenance employees, and to perform minor repairs to equipment and buildings of a county school system.

    Job Summary:

    To perform duties which keep the county buildings in such a state of operating excellence that they present no problems or interruptions of the educational program. The custodian performs assigned custodial duties and repairs and receives supervision from the building administrator.

    The job of General Maintenance Worker is to provide maintenance services as needed and/or assigned, assist in a wide variety of maintenance activities, address immediate operational and/or safety concerns, assist skilled tradesmen, and ensure that tools, materials, and vehicles are maintained and in good working order and are available at a job site when needed.

    Skills are required to perform multiple tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include but are not limited to operating equipment used in skilled trades (power and hand tools, etc.), adhering to safety practices, handling hazardous materials, and planning and managing projects. Knowledge is required to perform algebra and/or geometry, read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, present information to others, and understand complex, multi-step written and oral instructions.

    Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include but are not limited to standard methods, materials and tools used in assigned skilled trade, and safety practices and procedures.

    Ability is required to schedule activities and/or meetings, gather and/or collate data, and use job related equipment.

    Flexibility is required to work with others, work with data utilizing defined and similar processes, and operate equipment using standardized methods.

    Ability is also required to work with a wide diversity of individuals, work with similar types of data and utilize a variety of?job-related?equipment.

    Some problem solving may be required to identify issues and select action plans. Problem solving with data may require independent interpretation and problem solving.

    • Clears brush, cuts grass, digs ditches, and performs other grounds maintenance duties.
    • Coordinate with skilled tradesmen and/or assigned supervisor(s) for the purpose of completing projects and work orders efficiently.
    • Install system component parts, classroom and office equipment and facility components for the purpose of providing a safe and workable environment.
    • Maintain assigned vehicle, tools, and equipment for the purpose of ensuring availability in safe operating condition
    • Participate in meetings, workshops, trainings, and seminars for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions.
    • Prepare written materials (e.g., repair status, activity logs, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities and/or conveying information.
    • Repair furniture and building system components for the purpose of ensuring a safe working condition.
    • Respond to emergency situations during and after hours for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns.
    • Transport a variety of tools, equipment and supplies for the purpose of ensuring the availability of materials required at the job site.
    • Perform all other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit as assigned by the superintendent and/or director of maintenance.

    Title:

    Carpenter I means a person classified as a carpenter's helper.

    Carpenter II means a person classified as a journeyman carpenter.

    Job Summary

    The carpenter helps to maintain all aspects of the building structures in the county's physical facilities in a condition of operating excellence so that all educational use of it may be made at all times while ensuring compliance with State and County building codes.

    • Construct stair forms.

    • Install beams and metal studs.

    • Install reinforcement steel.

    • Frame, align, and brace walls.

    • Frame door and window openings.

    • Install floor and ceiling joists.

    • Install backing for hanging fixtures and cabinets.

    • Install exterior wall sheathing.

    • Install diagonal sub-floors.

    • Set metal door and window frames for masonry construction.

    • Install common, hip, and hip jack rafters.

    • Install composite strip shingles.

    • Install composite shingles on a ridge cap and in a valley.

    • Install roof and ridge vents.

    • Install gutters and down spouts.

    • Request purchase orders for goods and supplies to maintain operating inventory levels.

    • Keep accurate records.

    • Speak clearly and concisely both in written and oral communication.

    • Add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals consistent with the duties of this position.

    • Compute rate, ration, and percent consistent with the duties of this position

    • Perform duties in full compliance with county requirements and Board policies.

    • Perform renovations and remodeling of an existing facility, such as removing walls, installing doors or windows, etc.

    • Is responsible for the maintenance and repair of playground equipment;

    • Has the duty to perform tasks at or below classification when instructed to do so by the immediate supervisor.

    • Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective function of the work unit including, but not limited to, mowing, snow removal, and moving various items/equipment.

    • Perform the construction of buildings. (as required when such construction is not contracted)

    • Perform finish carpentry work of new and old buildings.

    • Provide information necessary regarding records of time, materials, costs, etc. of work projects.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material, the ability to adjust focus.     WORK ENVIRONMENT:

    The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The work environment includes indoor as well as outdoor settings and can range in temperature from below freezing to 90°F. The work surface can include unfinished crawl spaces and attics as well as roof tops, walk-in freezers, and concrete floors of pads. The noise level in the work environment is moderate to loud (60-90 dB).
