There presently exists a vacancy for a General Maintenance Worker in the Property Management Department. This is a permanent, full-time position located in Virginia, MN. General maintenance workers provide janitorial maintenance work at an assigned County facility.

The available shift is from 4:00 p.m. - 12:00 a.m. at the courthouse on an assigned floor.

The salary range reflected above is the normal hiring range for 2026. The full salary range, including longevity pay, is $21.28 - $28.75 per hour. Employees working a regular shift commencing between the hours of 2:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. shall, in addition to their hourly pay, receive a shift differential equal to $.90 per hour.

General Maintenance Worker Illustrative Examples of Work:

    1. Sweeps, dusts, damp mops, strips, seals and waxes floors
    1. Vacuums, spot cleans and shampoos carpets and rugs
    1. Collects and disposes of recycling and trash
    1. Cleans windows and window treatments
    1. Refills soap, towel and toilet tissue dispensers
    1. Cleans and polishes handrails, fixtures and elevators
    1. Replaces defective light bulbs
    1. Performs thorough cleaning of ceilings, walls and vents as required
    1. Performs minor repairs on janitorial equipment, as specified
    1. Assists in lifting and relocating office furniture and equipment
    1. Removes snow from walks, driveways and parking areas
    1. Cleans and sanitizes areas using established practices and procedures
    1. Operates light equipment, including skid steers, related to the upkeep and maintenance of buildings and grounds
    1. Cleans and maintains equipment; stocks supplies in janitor closets in orderly condition
    1. Ensures outside and inside doors are locked and advises supervisor or authorities of suspicious situations
    1. Assists maintenance workers and maintenance helpers as assigned
    1. Demonstrates punctual and reliable attendance in accordance with designated work schedule
    1. Complies with applicable safety rules, laws, and practice; uses proper safety equipment and procedures in all operations

This position is part of the Civil Service Basic Unit Employees Collective Bargaining Agreement represented by Council 5 of AFSCME.

Distinguishing Features of Work

An employee in this class performs a variety of tasks to ensure the cleanliness, sanitation, safety and security of County facilities. Duties include cleaning facilities, maintaining equipment and making minor repairs. The work is performed under the direction of assigned supervisory staff.

Work Environment

These work environment factors are general in nature and may vary depending on the specific position being filled. CONSTANT: Balance, grasp/handle, stand, walk and vision. FREQUENT: Lift and carry up to 10 pounds; reach, rotate trunk, stoop/bend, works alone, outside. OCCASIONAL: Push/pull up to 10 pounds, climb stairs, crouch/squat, customer/public contact. RARE: Lift up to 20 pounds, lift/carry up to 40 pounds, push/pull up to 55 pounds, climb step ladders, crawl, kneel, reach above shoulder, sit.

Selection Process

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (Pass/Fail):

  • High school diploma or its equivalent
  • Six (6) months full-time paid verifiable experience in custodial, janitorial, building maintenance or closely related work
  • Possession of a valid drivers license

RATING SYSTEM:
