Description

At Boxcar, our product is a good time. For us, that means cold drinks, exciting games, great pizza, and even better people.

Boxcar has four locations across North Carolina. We’re not a chain. We value personality. What ties each spot together is a team that cares deeply about making each guest’s night a great one and looking out for one another.

Our vibe is eclectic, sometimes eccentric, but always welcoming. Our customers are a mix of pinball regulars, after-work crews, party-goers, competitive skee-ballers, and folks who just want a smooth drink in a place that doesn’t take itself too seriously.

Our General Manager is the conductor of it all. All four of our business lines (bar, arcade, pizza kitchen, events) will be in your jurisdiction. We’re looking for a leader who can make sure the trains run on time and who never forgets that we’re in the business of entertainment. You need to be equal parts operator, motivator, and innovator.

We are in the final stages of construction in Winston-Salem and looking to open in the coming months. You’ll have the opportunity to build your team from the ground up and help launch a new location. If that excites you, keep reading.

What You'll Do

  • Lead your team. Your most important job is to foster an environment where people want to work. Hold everyone accountable through real-time feedback and consistent coaching.
  • Drive the culture. You set the tone, and your team mirrors it. Have fun. Own your mistakes and insist your team does the same. Represent Boxcar in the community.
  • Hire effectively. Proactively identify staffing needs, review and interview applicants, and handle onboarding. Hire for personality and conscientiousness, train for skill. Build a team of all-stars who eventually don’t need you.
  • Train continually. Make sure every employee has the tools and training to succeed. Set clear expectations. Design programs to routinely test employee knowledge and build pathways for them to advance their careers.
  • Control inventory and expenses. Oversee ordering for bar, kitchen, and building supplies. Work with your department managers to hit inventory and product cost targets.
  • Manage labor. Build schedules that meet the needs of the business and the staff.
  • Actively monitor the P&L. Work collaboratively with ownership to hit our financial targets and enhance the profitability of the business.
  • Create experiences. Plan and execute a consistent calendar of in-house events that drive traffic, build community, and make Boxcar a place people want to be.
  • Curate the product. Make sure our product is always attractive and exciting. Embrace experimentation but be ruthless about what’s not working.
  • Drive customer satisfaction. Monitor anecdotal and quantitative customer feedback and address issues so that we continually deliver an exceptional experience.
  • Maintain the space. Ensure the physical space is always clean, tidy, and attractive to customers. Shepherd all repair and improvement projects in a timely manner.

What We're Looking For

Our Non-Negotiables
  • No a**holes. We value kindness, honesty, integrity, and consideration. If you can’t abide by that, Boxcar isn’t the place for you.
  • One team, one dream. We don’t do silos or pass the buck. Pitch in and help out, even if it’s not your core responsibility. No job is too small.
What Else We're Looking For
  • Experience. You have multiple years of management experience in high-volume bars, restaurants, or entertainment venues, including demonstrated P&L responsibility.
  • Leadership. You have a track record of building, developing, and retaining strong teams. You lead by example and aren’t afraid to jump in wherever needed.
  • Business acumen. You understand the financials of running a venue, and how they connect to operations. You make decisions with the numbers in mind.
  • Conscientiousness. You take the job seriously, but you don’t take yourself too seriously.
  • Genuine hospitability. You like people, and it shows in how you work.
  • Humility. You lead from the front lines. No job is too small.
  • Ownership mentality. You view Boxcar’s success as your success and vice versa.
  • Striving for excellence. You always seek ways to innovate and improve processes.
  • Tech savviness. You know your way around a POS system and the Google ecosystem. Experience with scheduling, inventory, and other software tools is a plus.
  • Candid communication. You tell us the good and the bad, proactively.
  • Availability. You are ready to work a mix of hours, including weekends and holidays.
  • Reliability. Full stop. Show up, on time, every time.

What We Offer You

We’re not a corporate bar group. We’re a locally-owned business that cares about getting the details right for our people. Here’s what that means for you:
  • Competitive compensation. Base salary plus a quarterly bonus structure tied to your individual performance as a manager and our collective success as a business.
  • Autonomy. You’ll be in this role because we trust your judgment. You’ll have the freedom to run your building with the resources and support you need to be successful.
  • A culture you actually like. We aim to foster an environment where people want to work. We treat adults like adults, but don’t forget to have fun like kids.
  • We’ll have your back. The no a**holes policy applies to customers as well.
  • Growth opportunities. This doesn’t have to be the last job you have at Boxcar. We’re a growing company, and we want to invest in your career.
  • And the perks. Competitive benefits available, food & beverage discounts, and a workplace that is literally an arcade.

If you made it this far, let’s hear from you. Apply now.
