JOB TITLE: General Music (K-5)

REPORTS TO: Principal/Director of Fine Arts

WORK DAYS: 9 Months (187 days)

SALARY: Certified Schedule 16 (Level 1-4) ($49,080 - $93,875) Depending on degree level (recognized by ALSDE)

JOB DESCRIPTION: The General Music Teacher is responsible for planning and delivering high-quality music instruction to students in grades K-5. The teacher will provide opportunities for students to develop musical skills, knowledge, and appreciation through vocal, instrumental, and creative experiences aligned with Alabama Course of Study standards.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Plan and implement engaging, standards-based music instruction for elementary students
  • Teach music concepts including rhythm, melody, harmony, movement, and music literacy
  • Lead singing, movement, and basic instrumental activities
  • Prepare and direct student performances, programs, and school events
  • Assess and monitor student progress; maintain accurate records
  • Establish and maintain a structured, positive classroom environment
  • Collaborate with school staff, administrators, and Fine Arts Department personnel
  • Communicate effectively with parents/guardians regarding student progress
  • Maintain music equipment, materials, and inventory
  • Participate in professional development, faculty meetings, and school activities
  • Support district and school initiatives
  • Perform other duties as assigned

REQUIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of elementary music education principles and instructional strategies
  • Ability to differentiate instruction to meet diverse student needs
  • Effective classroom management and organizational skills
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to integrate technology into instruction
  • Ability to plan, organize, and execute student performances

QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor's Degree in Music Education or related field from an accredited college or university Valid Alabama Class B Professional Educator Certificate in Music (or eligibility to obtain) Ability to meet suitability criteria for employment and pass required background checks

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience teaching elementary general music
  • Training in Orff, Kodaly, and/or Dalcroze methodologies
  • Piano proficiency and/or accompanying experience
