    Position Summary

    The Department of Surgery at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is seeking applications for a full-time academic General Surgeon to join the recently established Section of General Surgery within the Division of GI Surgery. This position will include practice at both UNC Health Care at Hillsborough, as well as the Chapel Hill campuses. They will provide comprehensive general surgery services at UNC Health Care at Hillsborough, supporting the Department's mission to expand access to high-quality surgical care throughout central North Carolina, while building an elective practice with a focus in abdominal wall reconstruction, foregut, and/or minimally invasive general surgery.

    UNC Health Care Hillsborough is a 68-bed community hospital that combines the culture of a community hospital with the advanced technology and expertise of UNC Medical Center. The campus includes an outpatient medical office building with clinic and procedure space, growing emergency department volumes, robotic surgery capabilities, and expanded operating room capacity. The Department of Surgery is committed to growing both elective and emergency surgical services at Hillsborough while extending specialty surgical care closer to the communities we serve.

    Clinical responsibilities will include elective and urgent general surgery, emergency general surgery call coverage, outpatient consultation and follow-up, and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams across the UNC Health system. The successful candidate will work closely with colleagues across the Department of Surgery to ensure seamless coordination of care across campuses.

    This position is being recruited as an Open Rank, Fixed Term appointment between 0.5 FTE and 1.0 FTE faculty appointment, with academic rank commensurate with the candidate's qualifications and experience. The faculty member will be expected to perform clinical duties while fulfilling the academic responsibilities of an educational institution. Faculty members within the Division of GI Surgery are expected to contribute to the Department's three core missions of clinical care, education, and research. Individuals who exhibit exceptional skills and achievements may be considered for a leadership position within the Department of Surgery. Leadership roles are not guaranteed and are dependent upon the current needs of our surgical service lines.

    Faculty members are expected to participate in the education of medical students, residents, and other learners through clinical teaching and mentorship in both the academic medical center and community hospital settings. Candidates with interests in clinical research, outcomes research, quality improvement, health services research, surgical education, global surgery, or other scholarly endeavors are encouraged to apply. Faculty members must demonstrate a commitment to providing exceptional patient-centered surgical care while advancing access to high-quality surgical services in a community practice environment. Candidates should possess expertise in a broad range of general surgical procedures, including with minimally invasive and robotic surgery.

    The selected candidate must be collaborative, team-oriented, and able to work effectively with colleagues across multiple surgical specialties, hospital campuses, and interdisciplinary care teams.

    Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

    • MD, DO, or equivalent medical degree.
    • Board Certified or Board Eligible in General Surgery.
    • Eligible for medical licensure in the State of North Carolina.
    • Eligible for hospital privileges at UNC Health facilities.

    Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

    • Interest in expanding access to surgical care within community populations.
    • Experience with elective and emergency general surgery.
    • Interest or experience in minimally invasive and robotic surgical techniques.
    • Commitment to excellence in clinical care, medical education, and academic scholarship.
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams.
    • Demonstrated commitment to patient-centered care, quality improvement, and continuous professional development.
    • Interest in clinical research, outcomes research, surgical education, or quality improvement initiatives is desirable.

    Special Physical/Mental Requirements Campus Security Authority Responsibilities

    This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. This position will be required to report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and complete annual training about reporting responsibilities.
