Patients need a surgeon who decides quickly, operates cleanly, and owns the outcome from first consult through recovery. This role exists to deliver safe, timely operative care, reduce avoidable complications, and keep the surgical service reliable for the physicians and families who depend on it.
Performance Objectives
Complete a full surgical practice—elective, urgent, and emergency—meeting agreed case volume, OR start times, and turnover standards.
Achieve complication, readmission, and surgical-site infection rates at or better than service benchmarks, with every adverse event reviewed and acted on.
See new consults and post-acute follow-ups within defined windows so diagnoses, consent, and discharge plans are never the delay.
Lead the operative team so cases start prepared, blood loss and operative time stay appropriate to the procedure, and handoffs are complete.
Document operative notes, orders, and coding the same day so care, billing, and quality review do not stall.
Cover call as scheduled and be present for emergent cases within the required response time.
Teach residents, APPs, or OR staff on assigned cases so the next case is safer than the last.
Environment & Resources
Practice within a hospital surgical service with block time, on-call coverage, and a dedicated OR team.
Support includes anesthesia, perioperative nursing, advanced practice providers, and case management.
Tools include the hospital EHR, imaging, and standard laparoscopic and open instrument sets.
Reports to the chief of surgery or medical director of surgical services.
Essential Qualifications
MD or DO and completion of an ACGME-accredited general surgery residency.
Board certification or active board eligibility in general surgery.
Active state medical license, or eligibility to obtain one before start.
Current hospital privileges, or a record that supports privileging for core general surgery procedures.
Demonstrated independent management of emergency abdominal surgery, endoscopy or basic laparoscopy as required by the service, and perioperative complications.
DEA registration and ability to meet call, documentation, and quality-review expectations.
Why This Role
Breadth of practice: elective and emergency general surgery, not a narrow case mix.
Real authority over operative decisions, with a defined quality program behind you.
A staffed OR and APP support so your time goes to judgment and the operation.
A clear path to leadership in quality, education, or service growth if you earn it.
If you can own the case, the complication, and the follow-up, apply with your CV and a short note on the outcomes you are proudest of.
