POSITION: General Worker 1 for Food Services
3.5 hours per day; 10 months per year
Putnam Public Schools is seeking a reliable and enthusiastic General Worker to join our food services team for the 2026-2027 school year! In this essential role, you will help prepare and serve nutritious meals to our students and staff, ensuring a positive and hygienic dining experience. You will play a vital part in supporting student wellness within our district.
MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Food Services General Worker performs a variety of duties to support the daily operations of the school kitchen and cafeteria, with a strong emphasis on cleanliness and point-of-sale operations:
Dishwashing and Sanitation:
Washing, storing, and organizing dishes, trays, pots, pans, and serving utensils.
Operating and maintaining the commercial dishwashing machine safely and according to established procedures.
Maintaining high standards of cleanliness and sanitation in the kitchen, serving areas, and storage areas, adhering to all health codes and regulations.
Cashiering and Customer Service:
Operating the Point-of-Sale (POS) system to accurately process student and staff meal transactions.
Collecting money, counting change, and maintaining accurate records of daily sales and student accounts.
Providing friendly and efficient customer service to all students and staff.
General Food Service Support:
Assisting in the preparation of food items, following standardized recipes and portion control guidelines.
Serving meals to students and staff.
Assisting with inventory, receiving deliveries, and storing food items correctly.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
High School Diploma or GED equivalent is required.
Demonstrated ability to follow oral and written directions accurately.
Must be able to work cooperatively as part of a team and maintain positive working relationships with staff, students, and the public.
Basic math skills for handling cash and managing transactions are required.
Ability to meet the physical demands of the job, including standing for extended periods, lifting up to 40 pounds, and working in various temperature environments (e.g., freezers, near ovens).
Prior experience in food service, particularly with cashiering or high-volume dishwashing, is desirable.
RATE OF PAY: $19.50 per hour
