Nature and Variety of Work:
The Generator Maintenance Technician performs skilled work in the maintenance, repair, modification, and preventive maintenance of diesel-electric generating equipment and related systems. Work includes servicing, diagnosing, troubleshooting, and repairing diesel engine-driven electric generators, automatic transfer switches, and associated components. Assignments are received as oral or written orders, often accompanied by sketches or diagrams, and are performed with considerable independence within established policies, procedures, and technical guidelines. Because project locations are situated in different areas of the country, regular travel is required. There is also the opportunity for cross-training in HVAC, chillers, mechanical systems, and boilers to support broader service capabilities.
Supervisory / Leadership Responsibilities
- None. May provide informal guidance or on-the-job support to less experienced technicians as needed.
Responsibilities:
- Perform skilled maintenance, repair, and modification of diesel-electric generating equipment and related systems.
- Make modifications to diesel generator systems, including installation of pre-heaters, battery chargers, fuel systems, and other related components.
- Perform wiring modifications to diesel control circuits and electrical apparatus specific to diesel standby systems.
- Investigate, diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair diesel standby generator and automatic transfer switch (ATS) system problems.
- Execute preventive maintenance, including checking for leaks and worn parts, taking oil samples, ordering and installing replacement parts, and adjusting, calibrating, and inspecting the operation of automatic transfer switch equipment.
- Restore residual voltage to generator exciter fields as required.
- Prepare accurate records of repairs, maintenance performed, parts ordered, and parts used; document all system modifications.
- Transport equipment, tools, fluids, and materials to and from work sites; operate and maintain tools and safety devices used to lift, move, transport, repair, inspect, measure, or protect.
- Travel to project sites located in different areas of the country as required to support service and maintenance contracts.
- Participate in cross-training opportunities in HVAC, chillers, mechanical systems, and boilers to expand technical capabilities and support multi-discipline projects.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices applied in the maintenance and repair of diesel-electric generating equipment.
- Thorough knowledge of the methods, hazards, and safety precautions related to diesel engines and diesel engine-driven electric generators.
- Knowledge of diesel fuel requirements, including filter change schedules and related maintenance practices.
- Ability to read and understand electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, service manuals, control panels, and meters.
- Ability to apply theory, experience, and training in a logical and systematic manner to diagnose and resolve problems.
- Ability to prioritize problems, investigate alternatives, and implement effective solutions.
- Ability to maintain accurate records and prepare clear reports.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, coworkers, and customers.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Willingness and aptitude for cross-training in HVAC, chillers, mechanical systems, and boilers.
Education and Experience:
- Graduation from high school or vocational school required.
- Minimum of five (5) years of experience in the repair and maintenance of 750-2,250 kW generators.
- Demonstrated experience in the operation and maintenance of various types of diesel, gasoline, natural gas, and propane-fueled generator sets or similar equipment.
- Valid non-commercial Class C motor vehicle operator's license required.
- Must successfully pass a background check.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to transport and pull cables measuring up to four hundred (400) feet in length.
- Ability to work in confined spaces.
- Ability to lift weights in excess of fifty (50) pounds.
- Ability to work in environments where noise, odors, and fumes are present.
- Frequent standing, walking, climbing, kneeling, bending, and working around operating machinery.
- Adequate visual acuity and hearing to perform essential functions safely.
Work Environment:
- Work is performed primarily at customer and project sites, including mechanical rooms, generator rooms, outdoor equipment locations, and active construction or renovation environments.
- Travel to project locations in different areas of the country is required on a regular basis.
- Exposure to noise, heat, dust, odors, fumes, and operating machinery is common.
