POSITION OVERVIEW: Chief Geologist The Chief Geologist leads the geology function at Florida Canyon Mine and is accountable for the quality, integrity, and timely delivery of geological information used in mine planning, ore control, production, processing, reconciliation, and resource evaluation. The position directs geological modeling, drilling, mapping, sampling, assay quality assurance and quality control, data management, and ore-quality programs; develops the geology team; and partners with Mine Engineering, Mine Operations, Process, Environmental, and other site functions to support safe, compliant, and economically sound decisions. RESPONSIBILITIES: - Lead the site geology function and establish safe, effective priorities, standards, schedules, budgets, and accountabilities aligned with mine plans and operational requirements.
- Provide technical direction, coaching, performance management, and development for Senior Geologists, geologists, geo-technicians, samplers, contractors, and consultants.
- Own the development, validation, documentation, and maintenance of geological interpretations, resource models, and short-term production block models.
- Establish auditable standards for mapping, logging, sampling, assay QA/QC, database management, estimation, model updates, and technical reporting.
- Direct operational in-fill drilling programs, including design, budget, schedule, contractor performance, data quality, interpretation, and communication of results.
- Oversee ore-control and ore-quality programs, including blasthole sampling, material classification, stockpile practices, and geological support to production and processing.
- Lead mine-to-model and mine-to-mill reconciliation, investigate variances and trends, and coordinate corrective actions with site stakeholders.
- Ensure year-end, budget, forecast, and production models and related technical deliverables are accurate, auditable, and completed on schedule.
- Identify geological uncertainty, data gaps, risks, and resource-extension opportunities and coordinate appropriate technical follow-up.
- Partner with Technical Services, Mine Operations, Process, Environmental, Exploration, Survey, and other functions to support safe and economically sound decisions.
- Manage geology budgets, forecasts, laboratories, drilling contractors, consultants, and other service providers for safety, quality, schedule, cost, and compliance.
- Review and approve geological reports, model releases, project plans, and material technical assumptions before distribution.
- Champion Health, Safety, and Environment requirements and ensure geological fieldwork and contractor activities use appropriate risk assessments, controls, training, and supervision.
- Build a respectful, accountable, and collaborative geology team and perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS: - Bachelor’s degree in Geology, Geological Engineering, or a related geoscience discipline, required.
- Minimum 10 years of progressive geology experience, including open-pit gold production geology and resource modeling, required.
- Minimum 3 years of formal leadership or supervisory experience, required.
- Advanced knowledge of geological interpretation, geo-statistics, resource estimation, block modeling, grade control, sampling, QA/QC, and reconciliation, required.
- Advanced proficiency with Vulcan, Leapfrog, ArcGIS, or equivalent geological software and database systems, required.
- Experience managing drilling programs, technical budgets, contractors, laboratories, and strict reporting timelines, required.
- Knowledge of mine-site health, safety, environmental, and MSHA requirements, required.
- Strong technical writing, presentation, analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills, required.
- Ability to lead people, influence cross-functional decisions, and communicate complex geological information clearly, required.
- Valid driver license and acceptable driving record, required.
- Advanced degree and Professional Geologist registration or eligibility, preferred.
- Ability to perform essential field functions, including walking on uneven terrain and lifting to 40 pounds, required.
