Job Title: Geotechnical EngineerJob Description

A growing geotechnical and materials testing firm is seeking a Geotechnical Engineer to join its expanding team and support rising project demand across the Inland Northwest. You will contribute to a diverse mix of public and private projects of varying scope and technical complexity, including foundation design for buildings and infrastructure, landslide stabilization, and transportation and roadway design. This role offers the opportunity to take ownership of projects, collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams, and play a key role in delivering high-quality geotechnical solutions for clients.

Responsibilities
  • Lead geotechnical investigations and foundation design for public and private projects, including buildings, transportation infrastructure, and other civil structures.
  • Analyze subsurface and ground conditions, including soil and rock properties, slope stability, and seismic hazards, to support safe and efficient design solutions.
  • Plan, coordinate, and interpret field investigations such as drilling, soil sampling, and in-situ testing to develop accurate geotechnical models.
  • Prepare clear, concise, and technically sound proposals, geotechnical reports, design memoranda, and technical recommendations for clients and project teams.
  • Perform geotechnical analyses using appropriate software and engineering methods to evaluate foundations, retaining structures, slopes, and other geotechnical systems.
  • Supervise and mentor junior engineers, technicians, and field staff, providing guidance on field investigations, laboratory testing, and analysis methods.
  • Oversee construction materials testing activities, including concrete and soil testing, to verify compliance with project specifications and standards.
  • Manage projects from initiation through completion, including scope development, budgeting, scheduling, and quality control, while ensuring client satisfaction.
  • Collaborate with clients, consultants, contractors, and internal teams to define project objectives, resolve technical issues, and deliver coordinated design solutions.
  • Attend project meetings and maintain regular communication with stakeholders to provide updates, address concerns, and support decision-making.
  • Engage in business development activities, including building and maintaining client relationships and identifying opportunities for new or expanded services.
  • Participate in professional organizations and industry events to stay current with geotechnical engineering practices and enhance the firm’s visibility in the marketplace.
Essential Skills
  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Geological Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
  • 5–10 years of geotechnical engineering experience.
  • Current Professional Engineer (PE) registration in Washington or Idaho, or the ability to obtain licensure within 30 days of employment.
  • Prefer at least 3+ years of experience practicing geotechnical engineering as a licensed Professional Engineer.
  • Demonstrated experience in leading geotechnical investigations and designing foundations for public and private projects.
  • Proficiency in geotechnical analysis, including evaluation of soil and rock properties, slope stability, and seismic hazards.
  • Experience with construction materials testing, including concrete testing, soil testing, and inspection of construction materials.
  • Familiarity with drilling operations and subsurface exploration methods used in geotechnical investigations.
  • Strong project management experience, including managing scope, budget, schedule, and quality for engineering projects.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to prepare clear technical reports and present findings to clients and colleagues.
  • Proven ability to work directly with clients, including experience in client coordination and developing new business opportunities.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD for preparation and review of engineering drawings.
  • Experience or training as an Engineer in Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer (PE) in geotechnical engineering.
  • Understanding of ACI standards and practices related to concrete and construction materials testing.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in geotechnical engineering or a related field is beneficial but not required.
  • Experience using geotechnical software such as Lpile and Slide is a plus.
  • Experience with additional geotechnical design or analysis tools is advantageous.
  • Background in geological engineering or geology-related coursework is helpful for interpreting subsurface conditions.
  • Experience in transportation and roadway design from a geotechnical perspective is an asset.
  • Membership or active participation in professional engineering organizations is encouraged.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor junior staff and contribute to a collaborative team culture.
  • Interest in long-term career growth within a geotechnical and materials testing environment.
Work Environment

The role is based in the Inland Northwest and offers flexibility to work from multiple office locations, including Tri-Cities, Spokane, Lewiston, Meridian, Missoula, or Hayden. You will work in a collaborative environment where engineers, field staff, and project teams coordinate closely to deliver high-quality geotechnical and materials testing services. The culture emphasizes partnership across offices as engineering functions become more centralized, creating opportunities to work on a wide variety of projects and share expertise across regions. The organization values each team member as an integral part of the group and promotes a supportive, team-oriented atmosphere. In addition to a competitive total rewards package, the firm offers a long-term wealth-building program through bonuses and an employee stock ownership structure, designed to reward sustained contribution and tenure.
