A well-established engineering firm is seeking a Construction & Environmental Field Technician/Inspector to support ongoing geotechnical, environmental, and site/civil projects across the region. This role involves field-based inspection and oversight of construction activities-including buildings, utilities, pavements, ground improvement, and environmental work-to ensure compliance with plans, specifications, and regulatory standards. The position is 100% field-based and requires frequent travel, including potential out-of-state assignments.
Primary Responsibilities:
Conduct inspections for piles, deep dynamic compaction, ground improvement, and deep foundations.
Observe compacted fills (including use of nuclear density gauges).
Inspect utility installation, concrete placement, rebar, and other sitework elements.
Verify structural dimensions, levels, alignment, and elevations.
Conduct routine geotechnical laboratory checks and prepare test samples.
Document construction and inspection activities; complete daily progress reports.
Prepare sketches, data summaries, tables, maps, and reports.
Participate in environmental audits and related documentation.
Assist with environmental sampling (soil and groundwater), well installations, and monitoring.
Direct drilling operations for exploratory borings and test pits.
Interpret blueprints, plans, and specifications; discuss deviations with contractors.
Classify soils and evaluate geologic conditions.
Perform permeability testing, cone penetrometer observations, and geoprobes.
Prepare cost estimates, proposals, certification letters, and project documentation.
Operate and maintain field equipment (hand augers, nuclear density gauge, etc.).
Comply with OSHA, environmental, and construction safety policies.
Identify potential new project opportunities and maintain a professional presence with clients.
Work with general supervision but exercise independent judgment; mentor junior staff as needed.
Work Environment & Physical Demands:
Outdoor work 100% of the time in all weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, snow, ice).
Frequent walking on uneven terrain; exposure to insects, plants, and environmental elements.
Must regularly lift/move 50+ lbs.
Requires standing, walking, sitting, and handling tools/equipment.
PPE required: work boots, safety glasses, hard hat, safety vest.
Noise levels vary from moderate to high depending on site conditions.
Compensation:
$50,000-$70,000 base salary + overtime, mileage reimbursement, benefits, PTO, tuition reimbursement, 401(k), and bonus potential.
* Bachelor degree in engineering, geology, or environmental science, or 1 to 4 years of relevant experience in site inspections for compacted fills, foundations, and utilities.
* Proficiency in interpreting site plans and utility drawings with the ability to apply mathematical concepts to slopes, area, and volume calculations.
* Technical skill in using field equipment such as a nuclear density gauge, hand auger, and lump hammer while maintaining familiarity with AutoCAD and Microsoft Office.
* Valid driver license with reliable transportation and the ability to travel 100 percent of the time including out of state locations.
