GIS Specialist

Job Description

This role offers an opportunity for a GIS Specialist to work on-site in Southern New Jersey supporting environmental remediation operations. The position focuses heavily on field work and involves collecting, processing, and managing spatial data derived from heavy equipment on active job sites. You will use GPS hardware and GIS software to support field technicians, ensure accurate data capture, and provide reliable mapping and analysis to guide daily operations and reporting.

Responsibilities

  • Support remediation operations by providing GIS and GPS expertise on active job sites in Southern New Jersey.
  • Work extensively in the field at construction and remediation sites as well as in an on-site office environment.
  • Operate and support GPS hardware, including GNSS receivers, base stations, and rover units, to ensure accurate data collection.
  • Collect, process, and input data extracted from heavy equipment such as excavators, including coordinates, movements, and site specifications.
  • Work with both vector and raster datasets to create, update, and maintain geospatial layers and maps.
  • Perform data collection and processing to support daily operational needs and project requirements.
  • Support field technicians with data collection workflows, ensuring that they use GIS and GPS tools correctly and efficiently.
  • Use GIS software such as QGIS and ArcGIS, including field applications, to manage and analyze spatial data.
  • Report quantities, daily metrics, and other key performance data derived from field operations and equipment tracking.
  • Maintain organized file structures, databases, and project documentation for GIS and GPS data.
  • Follow established written and verbal instructions, workflows, and procedures to ensure consistency and data integrity.
  • Learn and adapt to new software, GIS systems, and tools as needed to support evolving project requirements.
  • Apply basic Python coding within GIS software to assist with data processing, automation, or analysis tasks.
  • Travel locally as required to support multiple job sites and field operations.

Essential Skills

  • Fluency with GIS software, specifically QGIS and ArcGIS, including the use of field applications such as Field Maps and Survey123.
  • Experience using mapping and GIS software for data collection, mapping, and spatial analysis.
  • General understanding of GPS hardware, including GNSS receivers, base stations, and rover units.
  • Knowledge of GPS equipment from manufacturers such as Trimble or similar providers.
  • Ability to perform GIS analysis, data entry, data processing, and data analysis in support of field operations.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions, workflows, and documented processes and procedures.
  • Ability to learn new software and GIS systems quickly and apply them in a field-focused environment.
  • Basic understanding of Python coding within GIS software environments to support data processing or automation.
  • Strong file maintenance and organization skills to manage spatial data, project files, and documentation.
  • Willingness and ability to travel locally to support field operations and multiple job sites.
  • Comfort working in a role that emphasizes field work more than traditional office-based GIS positions.

Qualifications

  • Experience working in environmental remediation projects is a plus but not required.
  • Preferred, but not required, degree in GIS or a related field such as Geology, Environmental Science, or a similar discipline.
  • Experience supporting construction or heavy equipment operations with GIS and GPS data is beneficial.
  • Previous experience with data collection and processing in field environments is advantageous.
  • Interest in long-term career growth within GIS and field operations, with openness to training and skill development.
  • Ability to work effectively with field technicians and operations teams in a collaborative environment

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Vineland, NJ.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $40.00/hr.
