A Distribution GIS (Geographic Information System) Technician with 10 to 15 years of experience is responsible for overseeing the development, management, and optimization of GIS databases for utility distribution systems. This role plays a critical part in ensuring the accuracy of spatial data, supporting distribution operations, and guiding less experienced technicians. Key Responsibilities: Data Management: Manage, maintain, and optimize GIS databases for the utility's distribution network, ensuring data accuracy, completeness, and currency. Leadership: Provide leadership and mentorship to junior GIS technicians, guiding them in best practices, data quality, and efficient data management. Data Collection: Oversee data collection efforts, including field surveys, GPS equipment, or other data sources, to accurately reflect changes in the distribution system. Mapping: Create and update complex maps, drawings, and schematics of distribution infrastructure using GIS software. Advanced Analysis: Perform advanced spatial analysis to support distribution planning, asset management, and outage management, aiding in strategic decision-making processes. Documentation: Maintain comprehensive records, metadata, and documentation of GIS data sources and changes. Quality Assurance: Ensure the accuracy and compliance of GIS data, reviewing and making corrections as needed. Integration: Collaborate with other departments (e.g., engineering, operations) to ensure the seamless integration of GIS data with other systems, such as outage management and customer information systems. Reporting: Generate complex reports and maps for various stakeholders, including field technicians, engineers, and management, as well as for regulatory compliance. Training and Support: Provide training and advanced technical support to end-users of GIS systems within the organization. System Upgrades: Lead initiatives to upgrade GIS software and hardware and ensure proper system maintenance. Data Security: Maintain the security and confidentiality of sensitive GIS data and ensure compliance with data privacy regulations. Industry Standards: Stay current with industry GIS standards and best practices and implement them in the organization. Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in geography, geospatial science, or a related field. 10 to 15 years of experience working with GIS systems, with a significant portion of that experience in the utility or energy sector. Expertise in GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS) and extensive experience with spatial databases (e.g., Oracle Spatial, PostgreSQL/PostGIS). Proficiency in data collection tools and advanced GPS technology. In-depth knowledge of utility distribution systems and associated data requirements. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to solve complex spatial challenges. Exceptional attention to detail with a commitment to data accuracy. Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams. In-depth understanding of data management and spatial data standards.
