REMOTE GIS Utility Mapping Technician
Build the Maps That Power Our Communities
Are you passionate about GIS, spatial accuracy, and infrastructure that keeps communities running? As a GIS Utility Mapping Technician, you'll play a critical role in maintaining and enhancing utility maps that support electric, gas, and water systems. Your work will directly impact engineering, field operations, and safe, efficient utility service delivery.
This is a great opportunity for a detail-oriented GIS professional who enjoys combining technical precision with real-world utility applications.
What You'll Do
In this role, you'll ensure the accuracy, integrity, and cartographic quality of utility and land base mapping data by working hands-on with GIS tools, engineering documents, and field information.
Key responsibilities include:
- Perform detailed visual and computer-based quality control on utility facility and land base mapping data
- Edit and correct GIS data to close backlog work orders and ensure geographic accuracy
- Produce high-quality map products for field crews and operational use
- Compare source documents against field data and vendor-converted products during conversion and post-conversion efforts
- Enter, validate, and reconcile data using QA/QC tools and editor applications
- Assign attributes, phasing notation, and asset details using switch diagrams and material documentation
- Update maps and databases based on work orders, work requests, installations, removals, bills of sale, and shared-use records
- Maintain switch diagrams and system maps using CMS, WMS, material tickets, and map sketches
- Collaborate closely with field and engineering teams to support accurate as-built documentation
- Maintain wall maps and materials supporting switching and operational activities
- Follow established company standards, procedures, and quality guidelines in all work
What We're Looking For
Required Qualifications:
- 2+ years of experience working with GIS in a utility environment
- Technical training or equivalent experience in utility engineering beyond high school
- Understanding of electric, gas, and land base systems and components
- Experience working with pole maps, underground maps, gas maps, water maps, and switch diagrams
- Strong GIS, mapping, and data entry skills
- Demonstrated attention to cartographic quality and spatial accuracy
- Ability to interpret work orders, material tickets, bills of sale, and construction sketches
- Strong collaboration skills for working with both field and office teams
Preferred Skills & Experience:
- Experience with Esri-based GIS platforms
- ArcFM experience for utility mapping and asset management
- Familiarity with ADMS, Maximo, or similar enterprise systems
- Experience in geography, geospatial data, or related disciplines
- Experience with AutoCAD or similar drafting tools
- Prior exposure to utility construction or engineering support environments
Work Environment
This role offers a hybrid work environment, blending office-based GIS and data work with field-related activities:
- Approximately 50% office-based GIS, mapping, and QA/QC work
- Approximately 50% field-related onsite support for as-built verification and data collection
- Field work may occur in active construction areas or outdoor utility environments
- Office work includes extended time at a computer using GIS software, editor tools, and peripherals
- Standard safety practices and established operational procedures apply
Why This Role Stands Out
- Work on critical utility infrastructure with real-world impact
- Balance office-based GIS work with field exposure
- Collaborate with engineering, operations, and construction teams
- Grow your utility GIS expertise in a technically challenging environment
