Job Description

The GIS Technician converts as-built data into geographic information systems (GIS), creates high-quality maps and reports for internal and external stakeholders, and supports geospatial tools and processes. This role focuses on maintaining data accuracy, meeting turnaround time targets, and collaborating with GIS analysts on complex projects while contributing subject matter expertise and training to the broader team.

Responsibilities

• Convert as-built data into GIS, ensuring accuracy, consistency, and adherence to quality and turnaround time metrics.
• Provide as-built training and quality assurance for GIS mapping contractors, ensuring that deliverables meet established standards.
• Create maps, drawings, and reports for internal and external customers, consistently meeting quality and delivery timelines.
• Serve as a subject matter expert on geospatial issues and provide training and basic system support to team members and stakeholders.
• Manage routine GIS tasks, including data management, digitization, and map creation, to support efficient and reliable operations.
• Collaborate with GIS analysts on complex projects, contributing technical input and supporting advanced geospatial analysis.
• Provide input on GIS tool enhancements, including suggestions for improving mapping software, workflows, and geospatial data management.
• Utilize ArcGIS, ArcMap, ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, and related Esri tools to perform GIS analysis and map building.
• Support the maintenance and updating of gas utility mapping data, including distribution and transmission systems, based on as-built information.

Essential Skills

• 2-5 years of experience working in GIS, including as-built updating and map creation within ArcMap, ArcGIS, or ArcGIS Pro.
• Proficiency with ArcGIS and related Esri tools, including ArcMap, ArcGIS Pro, and ArcGIS Online.
• Experience with GIS mapping, digitization, and map building software.
• Hands-on experience performing GIS analysis and working with geospatial data.
• Knowledge of gas utilities, including distribution or transmission systems.
• Bachelor"s degree in Geography, Environmental Planning, Environmental Science, or a closely related field, or a GIS minor or certificate.
• Strong understanding of GIS concepts, mapping principles, and geospatial data management.
• Ability to meet quality and turnaround time metrics while managing multiple mapping and data tasks.
• Effective communication skills to provide training, support contractors, and collaborate with GIS analysts and internal stakeholders.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Diploma or certificate in GIS or a related discipline is preferred.
• Experience working with Esri-based platforms and tools in a utility or infrastructure environment.
• Familiarity with engineering-related GIS applications and mapping for utilities.
• Background or coursework in Geography, Environmental Planning, Environmental Science, or related disciplines.
• Experience providing training or quality assurance oversight for GIS contractors or team members.
• Ability to contribute ideas for GIS tool and workflow enhancements.
• Comfort working within a collaborative, tight-knit team environment that values shared learning and social interaction.

Work Environment

This role follows a hybrid work schedule with four days per week in the office and one day per week remote, typically on Fridays. During the initial training period, there may be an expectation to be in the office five days per week to support onboarding and learning. The position is based in a modern office building in Naperville, located just off a major highway and close to restaurants, entertainment venues, and other amenities. The GIS team sits together on the sixth floor, and the GIS Technician will have an individual cubicle within the team area. The layout places newer hires near the hallway or walkway, with leadership typically seated toward the back near the windows, supporting easy access to guidance and collaboration. The GIS group is described as a tight-knit team that often organizes team lunches, happy hours, and other social activities, fostering a supportive and collegial culture. This is a long-term contract role with a term limit of up to three years, and there may be opportunities to explore permanent positions after gaining experience and demonstrating strong performance.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Naperville, IL.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $28.85 - $33.65/hr.
