Glass Manufacturing Technician - Southbridge, MA

Position Summary

Join a growing precision manufacturing team producing advanced glass components used in high-tech applications. This hands-on role is primarily focused on precision fiber stacking and billet assembly used in the production of Microchannel Plates (MCPs). You'll also have the opportunity to learn specialized glass manufacturing processes, including glass fiber draw tower operations.

No glass manufacturing or draw tower experience? No problem. We provide training for candidates with strong manufacturing or precision assembly experience who are eager to learn a unique and highly specialized manufacturing process.

Responsibilities

  • Assemble precision glass fibers into billets and multi-fiber preforms according to engineering specifications.
  • Stack glass fibers into molds and fixtures while maintaining proper alignment and material traceability.
  • Prepare glass batches for production.
  • Melt specialty glass using Radio Frequency (RF) heating equipment.
  • Operate glass extrusion equipment to produce precision glass tubes and fibers.
  • Test and inspect glass products throughout the manufacturing process to ensure they meet quality specifications.
  • Sandblast and etch glass tubes following established procedures.
  • Operate annealing furnaces to properly condition finished glass products.
  • Learn and support glass fiber draw tower operations through equipment monitoring and routine process adjustments (training provided).
  • Perform in-process inspections using microscopes, calipers, micrometers, gauges, and other precision measuring equipment.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, assembly drawings, work instructions, and production specifications.
  • Perform basic equipment troubleshooting and report more complex issues when needed.
  • Maintain production records and material traceability throughout the manufacturing process.
  • Follow all safety procedures while maintaining a clean, organized work environment.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience in manufacturing, production, machining, precision assembly, or a related technical environment.
  • Experience reading blueprints, technical drawings, assembly instructions, or work orders.
  • Experience using precision measuring tools such as calipers, micrometers, gauges, or microscopes.
  • Basic computer skills for production documentation and data entry.
  • Ability to sit for extended periods while performing detailed assembly work using up to 10× magnification.
  • Ability to work at elevated heights when supporting draw tower operations.
  • Preferred: Experience in glass manufacturing, optics, medical device, electronics, aerospace, semiconductor, cleanroom, or other precision manufacturing environments.
  • Preferred: Experience with thermal processing equipment, furnaces, extrusion equipment, or fiber materials.
