POSITION SUMMARY:
The Sergeant is responsible for enforcing Tribal, Federal, and State laws on Tribal Properties. The Sergeant is also responsible for the supervision of Police Officers.

Immediate peers, peers in other departments, immediate supervisor/manager, managers in other departments, Executives, Board of Directors, customers, and outside vendors/service providers.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Position medium with the lifting of 50 pounds maximum and frequent lifting/carrying up to 25 pounds. Physical factors include constant carrying, use of hearing, smell, near/midrange/far vision, depth perception, color/field of vision, driving; occasional standing, walking, sitting, lifting, pushing, pulling, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crawling, reaching, manual handling, bending, and typing. Working conditions include constant exposure to weather, frequent exposure to extreme cold, occasional exposure to extreme heat, wet/humidity, noise, vibration, air quality, and firearm discharge. Potential hazards include constant client/patient contact, computer and equipment, medical equipment use, occasional infectious exposure, and exposure to needles/syringes. Personal protection equipment provided by the employer includes items such as but are not limited to, gloves, gowns, face shields, masks, eye protection, mouthpieces, resuscitation bags, pockets masks, ventilation devices, and other equipment as needed. Immunization which includes the Hepatitis B vaccination series will be offered to team members at no cost.
REQUIREMENTS:
Education: High School diploma or equivalent required. Associate's Degree in Criminal Justice preferred.
Experience: Minimum of two years of experience working as a Police Officer is required; five years preferred.
Certification/License: Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) Certificate required. Must have completed MCOLES reading and writing test and physical test and provide proof of current passing scores. Must meet or be able to meet Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES). Must have or be able to obtain Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) Special Law Enforcement Commission (SLEC) Certification. Must be able to qualify with department-issued weapons and qualify using the State of Michigan Standards and the Federal Standards as required. Will be required to undergo and successfully pass a background check. Must maintain a good moral character standing. Must have a valid driver's license and be insurable by the Sault Tribe Insurance Department. Must comply with annual driver's license review and insurability standards with the Sault Tribe Insurance Department. Will be required to complete and pass pre-employment drug testing.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of constitutional, Federal, State, and Tribal laws, rules, and regulations is required. Knowledge and be able to use word processing and spreadsheet and database software required. Must have knowledge and ability to operate a boat safely. Must have typing skills. Must have working knowledge and be able to use office machines, such as copier, fax, printer, and computer. Must have clear and concise written and verbal communication skills. Must have good project management skills; provide strong leadership, prioritize project tasks, meet project deadlines, and effectively communicate with personnel, coworkers, subordinates, and the general public. Must be able to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with supervisory personnel, coworkers, subordinates, and the general public. Must be able to work extended hours when needed. Must be flexible and available to work various shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Native American preferred.
