To develop in each student an awareness of the role of science in economic and social progress; to motivate each student to acquire knowledge of scientific facts, principles, and skills in scientific methods of problem solving; to discover and develop special talents of students in scientific fields.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
I. Demonstrates currency in the curriculum.
A .Demonstrates a working knowledge of the core curriculum in Massachusetts General Science and Next Generation Science Standards and Practices.
B. Frames curriculum around key learning standards/concepts and essential questions in General Science that provide opportunities for reasoning, logic, analysis and synthesis when planning units, lessons, and assessments.
C. Keeps current in the various scientific fields and applies that knowledge to the instructional program.
D. Contributes to the ongoing evaluation of the curriculum while adhering to the school's vision of science education.
II. Effectively plans instruction and assessment in General Science and monitors student's understanding of the curriculum. Adjusts instruction, materials, or assessments when appropriate.
III. Manages the science lab safely and creates an atmosphere that is positive for student learning and engagement in General Science.
IV. Delivers instruction effectively.
A. The teacher makes learning goals of General Science clear to students and uses appropriate instructional techniques.
B. The teacher provides opportunities for students to interact directly with natural phenomena, design problems to understand collected data, grapple with scientific error as they analyze, interpret, and debate their lab findings which are essential for understanding science content and practices.
C. The teacher provides students with opportunities to develop the skills necessary for a meaningful progression of development in order to engage in scientific and technical reasoning.
D. The teacher evaluates, tries innovative approaches, and refines instructional strategies, including the effective use of technologies, to increase student learning and confidence to learn.
V. Promotes and communicates high standards, expectations, and rigor in General Science for student achievement.
VI. Promotes equity and appreciation of diversity and strives to ensure equitable opportunities for student learning.
A. The teacher demonstrates an appreciation for and sensitivity to the diversity among individuals. B. The teacher implements lessons that increase student engagement and leverages students linguistic, and cultural.
VII. Fulfills all professional responsibilities
A. Cooperates in interactions with parents and is receptive to their contributions.
