About this position: Grade Checker Location – Inyo County, CA The Essential Duties and Responsibilities are intended to present a descriptive list of the range of duties performed for this position and are not intended to reflect all duties performed within the job. Essential Duties & Responsibilities • Monitoring grade achievement on projects and assisting the Superintendent in meeting quality production requirements. • Operate & understand the use of measuring instruments and hand tools. • Setting grade markers and guiding earth-moving equipment operators in slope, cut, and fill embankments. • Calibrating base and rover survey equipment and managing construction equipment with GPS capabilities. • Ensuring compliance with project specifications and maintaining detailed records for ensuring the successful completion of construction projects. • Actively support and adhere to CEI safety policies. • Attend work consistently and regularly. Required (Minimum Necessary) Qualifications • Education Requirements: • Construction Staking – 5 years continuous experience • Topographic Surveying – 5 years continuous experience • Level of Experience Requirements: Knowledge of Section 152 of the FP-24 Standard Specifications, Construction Survey and Staking. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics • Ability to perform Construction and Survey Staking per Section 152.05 of the FP-24 Standard Specifications. • Establish vertical and horizontal survey control points. • Set benchmarks with a maximum spacing of 1,000 feet along roadways. • Perform survey work to establish permanent monuments and markers. • Adjust slope, reference, and clearing stakes as necessary during construction. Preferred • N/A Supervisory Responsibilities • This position will not have supervisory responsibilities. DOT Covered/Safety-Sensitive Role Requirements • This position does perform DOT “safety-sensitive” functions (as defined under 49 CFR Part 40) and is subject to all federal requirements related to Department of Transportation requirements for those performing, or on-call to perform, “safety-sensitive” functions. Necessary Physical Requirements The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this role. The Physical Requirements of this role involve standing, walking, climbing, balancing, crouching, lifting, holding, or stooping while on shift. Employees will be exposed to adverse weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold temperatures, inclement weather such as wind, rain, snow or sleet and dust and adverse driving conditions like wet, icy roads, and fog. Proper PPE, including protective eyewear, gloves, hard hat, ear protection and steel-toed boots are required. The position also requires lifting up to 50 pounds regularly and up to 100 pounds with assistance. Work Environment The work environmental characteristics described here are representative of those that must be borne by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the role. The Work Environment: The grade checker will perform various manual and grading tasks, such as setting grade markers, monitoring grade to guide earth-moving equipment operators, and operating measuring instruments and hand tools. The grade checker will maintain a complete and accurate log of control, grid coordinates, and location of the edges of work, survey notes shall be made available upon demand. Physical Setting: Flexibility to work in remote locations. Schedule and Flexibility: Minimum 40 hours per week, may require overtime. Other Pertinent Work Details: Travel is required. Additional Qualifying Factors As a condition of employment, you will be required to pass a pre-employment drug screening and have acceptable background check results. If applicable to the contract, you must also obtain and maintain the appropriate clearance levels required and must also be able to obtain access to military installations.
