Graduate Assistant, Residence Life
Essential Job Functions
Foster a positive, inclusive, and respectful residential community.
Develop and implement educational, social, and leadership programming.
Promote student retention, academic success, and campus involvement.
Serve as a mentor and resource to residential students.
Provide guidance, mentorship, and support to Resident Assistants.
Assist with RA training, staff development, and performance support.
Support the Residence Hall Director in staff accountability and program implementation.
Serve in a leadership role during hall openings, closings, and major events.
Enforce University policies and Residence Life regulations.
Respond to student concerns, incidents, and emergency situations.
Document incidents and prepare detailed reports in a timely manner.
Assist in conflict mediation and behavioral interventions.
Assist with housing assignments, occupancy management, and administrative processes.
Support assessment initiatives and data collection related to student engagement.
Maintain accurate records and communication logs.
Attend and participate in staff meetings, training sessions, and professional development activities.
Participate in an on-call rotation, including evenings and weekends.
Provide leadership support during emergencies and critical incidents.
Qualifications
Must be admitted to and enrolled as a full-time graduate student at Alcorn State University.
Must maintain full-time graduate enrollment throughout employment.
Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 (or as required by Graduate School and Residence Life policies).
Previous experience as a Resident Assistant or in a student leadership role strongly preferred.
Prior residence hall living experience required.
Experience in mentoring, supervision, or peer leadership preferred.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of student development theory and residential education practices.
Understanding of university policies and student conduct standards.
Strong leadership, mentoring, and team-building skills.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise professional judgment.
Conflict resolution and crisis management skills.
Organizational and time-management abilities.
Cultural competency and commitment to fostering an inclusive campus environment.
