Position Information
Title Graduate Assistant - Special Education Position Description
The Graduate Assistant (GA) will work 20 hours per week and receive up to 24 credits of tuition and student fee waivers: 9 for fall, 9 for spring and 6 for summer.
Responsibilities/Duties
- Represents the Department of Special Education to the college community
- Works with Department Chair and Graduate Chair to advance graduate programs
- Communicates information regarding graduate programs, licensure and M.Ed.
requirements to interested parties (assists Graduate Chair as appropriate)
- Supports Department communication and collaboration with the College of
Graduate Studies and the College of Continuing Studies (e.g., program requirements,
processing applications to the program, application to take comprehensive
examination, application to graduate)
- Maintains Blackboard communication for VC 161 Comprehensive exam, as well as
with non-matriculated and matriculated students with VC 151 Grad Studies
- Supports faculty research, coursework and professional development as appropriate
- Supports the Department in preparation for ongoing CAEP (formerly NCATE) efforts
(data collection and analysis via electronic portfolios)
- Consults graduate students with application and submission of TaskStream
assignments and responsibilities
- Supports, as the liaison among students, faculty, and professional organizations, and
the Department
- Facilitates the appropriate use of departmental professional materials, test kits,
testing protocols, and curricula materials
- Coordinates annual conferences run through Department (e.g., Legal issues in
Special Education; Linking with Thinking)
Outcomes
- The Graduate Assistant will gain valuable professional skills and knowledge related to higher education administration, program coordination, and special education licensure pathways.
- Through supporting the Graduate Chair and faculty, the GA will develop experience in graduate program operations, including application processing, communication with prospective and current students, and coordination of comprehensive examinations and graduation requirements.
- The position also provides opportunities to build skills in research support, data management related to accreditation (CAEP) and electronic portfolios, and the use of academic technologies such as Blackboard and TaskStream.
- Additionally, by assisting with departmental conferences and serving as a liaison among students, faculty, and professional organizations, the GA will strengthen their organizational, communication, and leadership skills while gaining deeper insight into the professional and regulatory landscape of special education and teacher preparation programs.
