Job Description:

Summary:


The Office of Student Disability Support (OSDS) is seeking a part-time Disability Support Graduate Assistant. The Graduate Assistant will support front desk operations and accommodated testing, with their time divided between tasks based on the time of year and team needs. The Graduate Assistant should be a current graduate student at American University. The position will report to the Disability Support Operations Manager.


Essential Functions:

  • Greeting visitors and responding to in-person inquiries.

  • Database management (e.g., scheduling appointments, processing new student applications).

  • Answering the main office phone, responding to OSDS inquiries and directing non-OSDS inquiries.

  • Managing the main office email.

  • General office support for the Disability Support Team.

  • Assisting the Disability Support Operations Manager with other projects and tasks as needed.

  • Preparing exam materials.

  • Checking students in and out for their tests.

  • Answering the testing phone.

  • Processing and tracking exam requests in the database system.

  • Assisting students and faculty with the database system.

  • Communicating with students and faculty regarding exams and exam materials.

  • Assisting the Accommodations Coordinators and Disability Support Operations Manager with other projects or tasks as needed.

  • Proctoring (in person and via video) as needed.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

  • Part-time.

  • 15 - 20 hours per week.

  • Potential working hours for the position are Monday - Friday, 8:45 AM - 5:00 PM. Interested candidates should be able to work shifts of 4 or more hours a day Mondays through Fridays, equaling a 20-hour week schedule.

  • Candidates should have the flexibility to occasionally work alternate hours throughout the semester and must be able to work 20 hours/week during Final Exams.

  • This position lasts for the entire academic year. Graduate Assistants do not typically work during school breaks (e.g., winter or summer break).

Salary Range:

  • $20.00 per hour.


Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree.

  • Currently enrolled in a degree-seeking graduate program at American University.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to engage professionally and diplomatically with a diverse university community — including current and prospective students, parents, faculty, and staff — and to navigate complex situations with care, empathy, and respect.

  • Strong organizational and multi-tasking skills.

  • Meticulous attention to detail across work tasks.

  • Comfort with learning new technology/databases and explaining technology/database processes to students and faculty.

  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative and manage tasks with minimal supervision.

  • Willingness to seek out and receive feedback.


Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Experience working in a university office.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
