Position Information

Title Graduate Research Assistant - Social Work, Joy in LGBTQ+ Communities Position Description

The Graduate Research Assistant (GRA) will work 10 hours per week and receive up to 15 credits of tuition and student fee waivers: 6 for fall, 6 for spring and 3 for summer.

Overview and Duties

A Graduate Research Assistant is sought for 10 hours a week by Dr. Breana Bietsch, Assistant Professor in the Social Work department. The graduate research assistant will work on a project examining joy in LGBTQ+ communities, and how aspects of joy or positivity impact health of communities as well as service assess.

This graduate research assistant position will focus on research and social work career readiness-oriented tasks related to this topic, which include:

  • Literature review research and writing
  • Assisting with study recruitment of participants, such as handing out fliers, speaking with community organizations or agencies, or onboarding participants to the study
  • Auditing of qualitative interview transcripts for accuracy
  • Member checking of themes from interview transcripts and note taking
  • Dissemination of research, such as assisting in writing for publication or preparing conference materials for presentation
  • Utilizing Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint
  • Mentorship and career guidance activities

Graduate Research Assistants should be social justice oriented and interested in working with diverse populations, such as LGBTQ+ populations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Interest in research with LGBTQ+ populations
  • A bachelor's degree in social work, psychology, anthropology, or related degree
  • Qualitative research experience or interest in learning more about this research technique

Physical Demands

  • Commuting to the school of social work office to complete 10 hours a week of research
  • Typing
