The Academic Success Program with the Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine (SFESOM) provides a comprehensive approach to medical student success. Our staff is committed to supporting University of Utah medical students by providing academic mentoring, tutoring services, workshops, and learning resources.
The Senior Learning Specialist will meet individually with students to provide information and guidance in academic-related issues, facilitate student progress, and help them improve their learning and development. The Senior Learning Specialist will ensure individual learning goals are met, provide opportunities for self-directed learning and will plan and implement programs that facilitate medical student success.
Responsibilities
Role Specific
This position will be a student-facing position, with limited administrative duties or expectations. Meets with students 1-on-1 (with a caseload of approximately 50 per class) to discuss study strategies, test-taking strategies, and other learning skills to help them meet their goals. Develops and presents education programs designed to supplement and enhance academic preparedness. Will work with the Academic Success Program team to ensure unit goals are achieved with respect to student success through all Phases of the curriculum, and on national board exams. The Senior Learning Specialist will be responsible for and provide oversight for Phase 1 student remediation, to include, but not limited to, coordination and communication with SFESOM faculty, development and implementation of an Individual Academic Success Learning Plan for any student who requires remediation, student remediation plans, and appropriate student referrals to ASP staff and services. The incumbent will also serve as the liaison to the Promis2U (P2U) pre-matriculation program and manage Academic Success Program services to P2U students. Oversees the hiring, training, and supervision of P2U tutors and mentors. In conjunction with the Academic Success Program team, will review student performance and utilize a data-driven decision-making approach to identify student academic needs and to assist students achieve academic potential. The incumbent will oversee the development and implementation of an Academic Success Workshop Series to be offered throughout Phase 1. Serve on SFESOM and university-wide committees aimed at student learning and development, act as the ASP unit Phase 1 student outreach coordinator, and throughout Phase 1 identify and attend weekly learning activities.
Approximate breakdown of breakdown of responsibilities: 60% student meetings, student outreach events, and Phase 1 Learning Activities; 20% student, faculty, and staff communication, including staff and committee meetings; 10% P2U; and 10% other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelors degree or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience).
2 years of related experience.
Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills
