Scope of the Position

STEPP Program mentors work closely with both students and all other STEPP team members. Mentors support the college transition process for students in the program both in systematic and informal ways. In addition to working with students to whom they are assigned, mentors will also be available in the office during set hours each week to assist any of the students in the program.

Responsibilities

Focus: Direct Service to Students

  • Meet a minimum of one hour each week with each assigned mentee. During the meeting develop a daily to-do list that reflects work in each course each day (as appropriate) and discuss other academic issues as relevant. Maintain records on tasks accomplished and items discussed during all meetings.
  • Develop an office schedule to be on hand for students in STEPP. Follow that schedule consistently and act as the primary source of direct support for students in the office during those on-duty hours.
  • Provide various types of assistance (primarily related to academic tasks) and respond to student questions as needed during on-duty hours.
  • Participate, as possible/appropriate, in STEPP activities that involve transition and program representation.
  • Develop and maintain appropriate boundaries with the students
  • Other duties as assigned

Focus: Collaboration and Communication

  • Meet weekly with STEPP Director, and other program mentors. (Weekly meeting time is TBD each semester.) Maintain ongoing and open communication.
  • Share with STEPP Director information about students that causes concern regarding their potential for academic progress and/or success at East Carolina University.
  • Complete daily/weekly field notes detailing activities, requests for help from students, assistance provided, etc. Much of the field notes should contain objective information. A portion of the field notes can contain personal reflections/opinions, but they should be labeled as such.
  • In the event of office hours when direct student support is not needed, assist with STEPP activities (record keeping, clerical, data collection, organization, materials development, course development, etc.) as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned

Preferred (Majors, Experience, GPA, etc.)

Dates of Employment & Compensation

Must be available to work a consistent schedule of 25 hours per week in the STEPP office during traditional business hours (Monday through Friday, 8 am to 5 pm). Individual schedules will be assigned based on availability and office coverage needs. Pay will be $14.00 per hour.
