Position Information

Job Title Graduate Student Experience Advisor Summary

The Graduate Student Experience Advisor's responsibilities include designing, implementing, and delivering graduate student success initiatives that support student retention, progression, and graduation. This position also supports advising for undergraduates who are pursuing Accelerated Dual Degrees and will matriculate into JCU graduate programs.

Duties and Responsibilities

Program management that supports engagement and retention of matriculated graduate students, including academic and student support:

  • Works collaboratively with other offices (e.g., Career Center, Student Experience and Belonging, University Counseling Center) to plan community-building events that support networking, professional development, academic support, and social support.
  • Explores retention initiatives for graduate students and makes recommendations about strategies to pursue.
  • Runs and interprets reports to track student progress; works closely and collaboratively with Registrar's Office.
  • Determines academic sanctions for graduate students through judicious application of policy.
  • Determines whether graduate students conditionally admitted to programs have met the expectations of their admissions decision and works with admissions staff and graduate program directors to convey these decisions to students.
  • Works collaboratively with admissions staff and graduate program directors to facilitate readmission process.
  • Supervises and mentors student worker(s).
  • Oversees the Graduate Assistant program process. Works closely with other campus units to support enrollment and compliance.
  • Oversees communication to the Graduate School population.

Advising:

  • Advises undergraduates who are planning on participating in an Accelerated Dual Degree pathway; liaises with Student Success and serves as part of an undergraduate's Onward Team if the student has declared an ADD, then manages the student's transition to a graduate faculty advisor.
  • Maintains the Graduate School Advising Handbook; collaborates with Academic Success to run advising workshops; is a resource for graduate students and faculty.
  • Serves as advisor to the Graduate Student Association.

Onboarding new graduate students:

  • Facilitates GA orientation by developing content, organizing speakers, planning agendas and hosting events.
  • Coordinates graduate student online orientation, ensuring content is current, easy to use and apply, and follows best practices.
  • Connects incoming students to campus resources, facilitating connection to faculty advisors, understanding housing options, training in university software systems.
  • Participates in university committees, as appropriate.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Master's degree in counseling, student affairs, higher education, or related fields.

Minimum of 3 years of experience working with students in a higher education setting.

Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to make effective public presentations and ensuring others can understand university policy and procedures.

Highly organized, with strong customer service skills.

Ability to engage in data-informed decision-making in collaboration with the Graduate School, as well as Academic Affairs and other University leaders.

Ability to successfully prioritize, coordinate and facilitate multiple projects and deadlines independently and with limited supervision.

Proven ability to work collaboratively with students, faculty, and staff from across the university and manage conflict.

Interest in understanding and supporting John Carroll's mission to inspire individuals to excel in learning, leadership, and service in the region and in the world.

Preferred Qualifications

Direct experience as an academic advisor and/or success coach.

Experience in developing new and innovative programming.

Experience working with Slate, Canvas, or other data and learning management systems.

Evidence of commitment to Jesuit mission in higher education.

Normal Work Location, Hours and Conditions

This position works in-person from our campus in University Heights, Ohio. University core business hours are generally 8:30 am - 5:00 pm. However this position will require work to be performed outside of normal business hours.

Physical Requirements

Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; to travel to other office locations and to verbally communicate to exchange information.

Hours Full Time FLSA Exempt (Salary) Compensation & Benefits

Starting salary for this role will be $45,000 - $55,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
