Position Information

Title Graduate Writing Fellow - Public Administration, MPA Position Description

The Graduate Writing Fellow (GWF) will work 10 hours per week and receive up to 15 credits of tuition and student fee waivers: 6 for fall, 6 for spring and 3 for summer.

Duties

As a Graduate Writing Fellow, you will serve as a dedicated academic support resource, working 10 hours per week to enhance the writing skills and academic success of graduate students in all academic programs at BSU.

Your key responsibilities include:

  • Provide tailored writing assistance to students both inside and outside your academic program to foster their development in composition and scholarly communication.
  • Work at least 2 of the 10 weekly hours on campus in the College of Graduate Studies, Lifelong Learning Lounge (Hart 118), or other location approved by Graduate Studies. This is a required and non-negotiable commitment for all GWFs.
  • Assist students with writing projects through various formats, including in-person consultations, email correspondence, phone calls, and virtual platforms such as Skype or FaceTime.
  • Contribute to students' writing development through workshops, newsletters, writing tips, Blackboard posts, and classroom visits.
  • Plan and deliver a minimum of two writing-focused workshops each semester. These may be targeted to your specific program or offered university-wide.
  • Attend mandatory monthly group meetings (date/times of these meetings will be discussed within the group).
  • Attend the Graduate Fellowship Orientation in September.
  • Participate in the spring Student Arts and Research Symposium, a requirement of all graduate assistants and fellows.
  • Participate in training sessions and professional development opportunities to continuously refine writing skills to guide students in academic writing.
  • Track hours and services provided, and complete brief reports as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

Requirements

  • Be enrolled in at least 6 graduate credits each fall and spring semester
  • Demonstrate strong academic and professional writing skills including the ability to write clearly and coherently
  • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse student populations in one-on-one and group settings, both in person and virtually
  • Ability to provide writing support across a variety of academic programs, or a willingness to learn and adapt as needed
  • Willingness to work closely with other Graduate Fellows, faculty, and staff, and to contribute to a supportive academic community
  • Be knowledgeable of specific writing style guides (APA, MLA, Chicago, etc.)
  • Be proficient in the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
