Grant Accountant / Senior Accountant

Location: Portland, OR (Hybrid)

Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM

Compensation: $30-$45/hour

Reports To: Interim Finance Director

Position Summary

Our client, a well-established nonprofit organization, is seeking a Grant Accountant / Senior Accountant to support the accounting team during a period of organizational transition and growth. This role will be responsible for grant accounting, general ledger activities, financial analysis, and audit support while helping ensure the accuracy and integrity of the organization's financial records.

The ideal candidate brings strong nonprofit accounting experience, a solid understanding of grant funding and restricted funds, and the ability to work collaboratively in a dynamic environment. This position offers the opportunity to make a meaningful impact while supporting a mission-driven organization.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support month-end and year-end close activities, including journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial reporting
  • Review and monitor grant expenditures across approximately 30 grants to ensure compliance with funding requirements
  • Track and reconcile restricted and unrestricted funds
  • Perform monthly variance analysis and assist with forecasting activities
  • Conduct credit card reconciliations and maintain supporting documentation
  • Assist with annual audits and provide audit schedules and supporting materials
  • Review accounting transactions for accuracy and completeness
  • Support process improvements and special projects within the accounting department
  • Provide guidance and review work completed by other accounting team members as needed
  • Collaborate with finance leadership to support organizational reporting and decision-making

Qualifications

  • 3-5+ years of progressive accounting experience
  • Nonprofit accounting experience strongly preferred
  • Experience with grant accounting, including tracking restricted and unrestricted funds
  • Strong understanding of general ledger accounting and financial reporting
  • Experience reviewing or overseeing the work of other accounting staff
  • Proficiency with Excel and accounting systems
  • Experience with Paycom is a plus
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines
  • Effective communication skills and a collaborative, team-oriented approach
