The Position

Job Appointment: Full-time, Regular.

Work Schedule: Friday- Tuesday, 5:00 AM - 1:30 PM (6:00 AM - 2:30 PM October - April).

Work Location: This position reports to Heron Lakes Golf Course at 3500 N. Victory Blvd. Portland, OR 97217.

Position Summary:

This is an Assistant Golf Course Superintendent position. Portland Parks and Recreation is seeking a skilled and experienced individual to join our team as a Golf Course Lead Greenskeeper. In this role, you will provide specialized care to golf course greens, grounds, and facilities while also serving as a lead to assigned workers. Your knowledge of golf course maintenance and leadership abilities will be crucial in ensuring the playability and overall maintenance of our courses.

What You'll Do:

  • Utilize specialized knowledge of golf course operations to support the supervisor in ensuring the playability of assigned courses.
  • Plan, schedule, and coordinate work activities, including determining resource needs and directing the work of the crew.
  • Review the work of assigned staff, provide training, and offer guidance to ensure quality standards are met.
  • Perform computer-related tasks such as timekeeping, record-keeping, and procurement.
  • Hand water, monitor moisture levels, troubleshoot irrigation malfunctions, and manage irrigation scheduling.
  • Assist in the installation, maintenance, and repair of the irrigation system.
  • Set up the golf course (change hole and tee locations).
  • Manage teams for bunker maintenance and restoration projects.
  • Mow all heights of cut on the golf course and roll greens, as needed.
  • Identify turfgrass diseases.
  • Apply fertilizers, pesticides, and sand topdressing.
  • Assume lead responsibilities in the absence of the superintendent.

To Qualify

Applicants must demonstrate how their education, training, and experience meet each of the minimum qualifications listed below:

  • Experience performing all golf course maintenance tasks that ensure daily playability (including water management, bunker maintenance, and golf course setup)
  • Experience safely and effectively applying fertilizers and pesticides.
  • Experience training staff, assigning work, reviewing work quality, and providing guidance to ensure maintenance standards are met.
  • Experience troubleshooting, installing, maintaining, and repairing irrigation components.
  • Ability to work constructively within a team environment and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

Applicants must also possess:

  • A valid state drivers license and an acceptable driving record

  • Conditional Job Offer - (September): Final candidates may undergo a background or driving record check, depending on the position.
