Summary/ObjectiveThe Grossing Technician provides anatomic pathology services under the direction and supervision of a Board Certified, licensed medical doctor (Pathologist). Grossing Technician is required to gross and dictate gastrointestinal biopsies, small biopsies (including cores), prostate cores, and any small tissue that does not require dissection. Grossing Technicians will interact with pathologists in same manner that physicians' assistants carry out their duties under the direction of physicians in surgical and medical practices. The Grossing Technicians serves as the eyes of the pathologist and is often the initial (and sometimes only) individual to look at the specimen when it arrives from the operating room, clinic and/or physician's office. Grossing Technician's contribute to the overall efficiency of the laboratory or pathology practice in a cost effective manner by performing a variety of tasks, consisting primarily of gross examination of surgical pathology specimens.Shift: Monday - Friday 4:00pm - 12:30am Location: ModestoEssential FunctionsPreparation, gross description, dictation and dissection of human tissue.Select representative sections for embedding, staining and microscopic evaluation.Ensures appropriate specimen accessioning.Photograph pertinent gross specimens as needed.Retrieve the patient's medical chart and other pertinent data for review with the attending pathologist.Confer with the attending pathologist to identify any special techniques or procedures to be utilized.Ensure the proper maintenance of equipment.Provision of adequate supplies.Cleaning of grossing stations.Disposal of biological and administrative waste.Solve any discrepancies or other issues that may arise.Job Requirements and SkillsAssociates of Science degree in Biological Sciences or related fieldBasic knowledge of human anatomy, macro surgical techniques, and general laboratory skills preferredDemonstrated ability to obtain and prepare tissue for evaluation and to provide assistance to pathologists in a timely and quality manner. Proficiency in preparing and maintaining records and in use of electronic communications tools and software. Knowledge/ability to become knowledgeable in voice recognition software, internet and multiple-interfaced systems, various laboratory information systems, Excel, and MS Word or equivalent applications. High degree of technical competence and knowledge of histological techniques. Experience that demonstrates strong interpersonal and customer service skills with the ability to establish rapport with persons of diverse backgrounds which also includes experience working with students, staff, and faculty, with a higher or lower education levelAbility to interpret complex rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and guidelinesDemonstrated ability to organize workloadMust possess a professional demeanor and have experience that demonstrates problem solving skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks and work independently with minimal supervisionMust be detail oriented, self-motivated, a fast learner and possess excellent time management, organizational, written and verbal communication skillsAbility to take direction and use independent judgment to coordinate and meet multiple deadlinesFamiliarity with HIPAA and security compliance requirementsStrong communication skillsAbility to work in a high stress environmentAttention to detailKnowledge of general laboratory protocols and techniquesStrong interpersonal skillsQuality FocusCompensation and Benefits: The compensation range is $52,000 - $85,000 annually.
