Summary
Redwire Space Missions LLC is seeking a Ground Systems Engineer, Staff to join our team in Littleton, CO. The Ground Systems Engineer will support the development, integration, and operations of satellite ground systems across the full mission lifecycle. This role requires a strong systems engineering background with hands-on experience defining operational concepts (OpCons), Space-to-Ground Interface Control Documents (S2G ICDs), and decomposing spacecraft system-level requirements into detailed ground system and mission operations requirements. A mission operations background—especially experience with ground TT&C software, GUIs, and on-console operations—is highly desirable.
The ideal candidate understands spacecraft operational constraints and limitations and can translate them into clear, user-facing documentation such as on‑orbit handbooks, ground software user guides, and operational procedures. Experience supporting real-world mission ops activities, including procedure development and test events, is preferred.
Responsibilities
- Support Government customers in planning, engineering, integration, and activities for satellite ground systems.
- Develop, refine, and document OpCons, mission threads, Use Cases, and S2G ICDs to ensure clear and executable end‑to‑end operational workflows.
- Analyze site-level ground system architectures and assess impacts from system upgrades, capability insertion, and new deliveries.
- Translate space segment and mission requirements into detailed ground system functional, performance, and operational requirements.
- Collaborate with spacecraft, payload, network, TT&C, and user segment teams to define and manage complex system interfaces.
- Support integration and test planning and execution across ground and space segments, including functional checkout, compatibility testing, and mission rehearsals.
- Review designs, I&T artifacts, verification traceability, and operational concepts for alignment with mission requirements and operational feasibility.
- Participate in operational readiness events such as rehearsals, simulations, validation exercises, and transition-to-operations activities.
- Develop and maintain ground system documentation including user guides, operator handbooks, mission operations procedures, and interface documentation.
- Provide technical reviews, decision briefings, and risk assessments to customers, with clear articulation of technical, schedule, and cost impacts.
- Deliver analyses, recommendations, technical plans, reports, and briefings that inform customer decision-making.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in systems engineering, aerospace engineering, computer science, or related STEM field.
- 5+ years of experience supporting satellite ground system development, integration, test, or mission operations.
- Strong systems engineering foundation spanning concept development, requirements management, design, I&T, operations, maintenance, and decommissioning.
- Experience defining and managing system architectures, interface definitions, ICDs, data flows, and verification approaches.
- Hands-on experience with OpCon development, S2G ICDs, ground system requirement derivation, or mission ops requirement definition.
- Ability to work independently, anticipate customer needs, and craft well‑reasoned solutions for broad technical challenges.
- Proficiency with standard engineering and business tools (MS Office, project management software).
- Proven ability to establish trust and maintain strong client relationships.
- Understanding of Government acquisition processes, milestone reviews, and spacecraft lifecycle phases.
- Strong oral and written communication skills, able to translate complex technical issues for senior leadership.
- US Citizenship with the ability to obtain a DoD Security Clearance.
Desired Qualifications
- Master’s or Ph.D. in a STEM discipline.
- 10+ years supporting satellite ground systems, mission operations, or multi-mission ground enterprise environments.
- Experience across multiple satellite ground program lines or operational production environments.
- Background in planning and executing DoD or Intelligence Community programs.
- Familiarity with MBSE/digital engineering methodologies, DevSecOps principles, and cloud-based architectures.
- Demonstrated experience with configuration management, architecture audits, verification events, and large-scale ground system deployments.
- Familiarity with JIRA, Confluence, and MBSE modeling languages (SysML, UAFML).
- Experience with cloud‑native ground systems, automation frameworks, and testbed sim technologies
