Grounds Maintenance Worker

The Grounds Maintenance Worker is responsible for maintaining the school corporations grounds, landscaping, equipment, and selected building areas. The employee performs routine lawn care, seasonal maintenance, snow and ice removal, equipment maintenance, landscaping, and light building maintenance to help ensure that school facilities are safe, attractive, and well maintained.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Grounds and Lawn Maintenance

• Mow and maintain school lawns, athletic fields, and other designated areas.
• Operate mowers, trimmers, edgers, blowers, and other grounds maintenance equipment.
• Remove grass clippings, leaves, branches, litter, and other debris.
• Maintain sidewalks, entrances, parking areas, and exterior spaces in a clean and safe condition.

Landscaping and Seasonal Maintenance

• Maintain trees, shrubs, flowers, and other landscaping.
• Apply mulch, soil, rock, and other landscaping materials.
• Assist with watering, irrigation, seasonal cleanup, and preparation of grounds.

Snow and Ice Removal

• Remove snow and ice from sidewalks, entrances, parking areas, and other areas.
• Operate snowplows, tractors, snow blowers, and other approved equipment.
• Apply salt, ice melt, or other approved materials to maintain safe surfaces.
• Respond to weather-related needs outside normal working hours when necessary.

Equipment and Light Building Maintenance

• Inspect, clean, lubricate, and perform routine maintenance on grounds equipment.
• Identify equipment problems and report or coordinate needed repairs.
• Maintain an organized inventory of equipment, tools, supplies, and materials.
• Assist with light maintenance and minor repairs within school buildings as assigned.
• Assist with moving furniture, equipment, and supplies and with setup for school events.

Safety and General Responsibilities

• Follow all school corporation policies, safety procedures, and applicable regulations.
• Safely operate vehicles, power equipment, and hand tools.
• Use appropriate personal protective equipment.
• Report accidents, injuries, unsafe conditions, and equipment damage promptly.
• Maintain positive and professional relationships with students, staff, and the public.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
• Experience in grounds maintenance, landscaping, equipment operation, or building maintenance preferred.
• Valid Indiana drivers license and acceptable driving record required.
• Ability to safely operate grounds and snow removal equipment.
• Basic knowledge of equipment maintenance and minor building repairs.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

This position requires frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, lifting, carrying, and operating equipment. The employee must be able to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, snow, and ice, and may be required to work early mornings, evenings, weekends, or outside normal hours for snow removal, emergencies, or other operational needs.
