Job Opening The Department of Conservation and Recreation seeks applicants for the position of Seasonal Groundskeeper I. The basic purpose of this work is to provide for the care and maintenance of grounds and facilities, including buildings, open space areas, lawns, trees, shrubs, flower beds, walks, roadways, and parking lots.

SPECIFIC DUTIES

  • Trims, prunes, cuts, and/or plants flowers, bushes, etc. as part of groundskeeping activities.
  • Seeds, waters, weeds, and/or fertilizes lawns, flower beds, shrubs, etc.
  • Sprays lawns, flower beds, shrubs, etc. with fertilizers or pesticides.
  • Assists in designing floral beds and planning plant placement for grounds beautification.
  • Cuts lawns using hand mower or power mower.
  • Makes minor repairs of sidewalks, roadways, and parking lots and clears them of snow.
  • Performs related duties such as emptying rubbish barrels, picking up trash, cleaning ditches, drains, and catch basins on grounds or roadways, shoveling snow, and raking leaves.
  • Based on assignment, incumbents of positions may also prune, cut, and remove tree limbs and branches.
  • Clean and maintain recreational facility restroom facilities.
  • Excavate grounds using backhoe and front and back loaders.
  • Vacuum, sweep, and clean the interior of recreational facilities.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class D Motor Vehicle Operators License (preferred).
  • Ability to understand and apply the rules, regulations, procedures, specifications, and standards governing assigned unit activities.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with others.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment.
  • Ability to lift and carry heavy objects.
  • Ability to stand for prolonged periods of time.

Special Requirements

  • Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class D Motor Vehicle Operators License.
  • Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid appropriate hoisting license issued by the Massachusetts Department of Public Safety may be required.
  • Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid pesticide applicators certificate issued by the Pesticide Bureau, Department of Food and Agriculture may be required.
