The primary job duty of the Grounds Maintenance Lead is oversight and evaluate all of the district grounds keeping crews and performing planting, pruning, and cultivating of trees, shrubs, and flowers, and the seeding, fertilizing, mowing, and trimming of all district sites. The Grounds Lead Person provides oversight for District athletic facilities. The Grounds Maintenance Lead oversees and performs the removal of snow, ice, leaves, fallen branches, other weather-generated debris, and trash from all district grounds and instructs groundskeepers in the proper use of tools and equipment. The duties described below are indicative of what a Grounds Maintenance Lead may be asked to perform. Some duties may vary in frequency and/or other duties may be assigned that are specific to the particular building and its grounds.
Grounds Maintenance Activities:
- Evaluate, Direct and assign work to district groundskeepers
- Maintain school lawns by irrigating, mowing, edging, hand trimming, fertilizing, and using weed control methods. Prepare areas for seed or sod, lay sod and sow seed. Operate riding mowers, spreaders, aerators and other equipment as needed.
- Trim and edge around walks, flower beds, and walls. Care for athletic fields, running tracks, courtyards, and fence lines.
- Maintain trees and shrubs by planting, pruning, watering, spraying, weeding and cleaning shrub plantings. Operate bush chippers, stump grinders, hydraulic sprayers, and other equipment as needed.
- Prepare flowerbeds for growing annuals and bulbs. Use roto-tillers as needed. Waters lawns, flowers, trees and shrubs. Plans and implements landscape designs.
- Apply fertilizers, and pesticides to lawn, shrubs, and trees. Application of chemicals must be in accordance with label directions utilizing an integrated pest management strategy.
- Cleans grounds and remove litter. Sweep up dirt and debris, clean around trash containers, and collect rubbish left on school grounds.
- Maintain athletic fields using appropriate turf care procedures including striping of playing surfaces, dragging infields, setting bases in position. Use riding mowers, roto-tillers, aerators, and lawn sweepers as needed.
- Plans for and implements athletic field maintenance and renovations. Includes, lining of diamonds, football, soccer fields, bleachers, press boxes, and athletic equipment set-up/tear down.
- Maintain surface drainage by keeping catch basins free of debris during heavy rainstorms and removing snow and ice in the winter months.
Winter Activities:
- Use hand tools to remove snow and ice from stairs, walks and ramps. Operate salt spreaders, tractors, snow blowers and plow trucks to remove snow and ice from walks, drives and parking lots.
- Spread salt/sand on public passageways, including parking lots, sidewalks, stairs and playgrounds to prevent ice buildup.
- Removes sand/salt in spring from public areas.
Equipment Responsibilities:
- Build, install, repair and tear down playground and physical fitness equipment in accordance with manufacturer instructions.
- Install and repair fences, gates, walls and walks. Paint fences and outbuildings.
- Install and clean out drainage ditches and culverts.
- Install, repair and perform preventative maintenance of irrigation/pump systems.
- Sharpen tools such as weed cutters, edging tools and shears.
- Repair equipment such as tractors, mowers, spreaders, snow removal equipment, engines and other equipment as needed.
General Duties:
- Shipping and receiving of goods and commodities. Deliver supplies to various schools throughout the District. Move equipment as necessary.
- Maintenance of records for inventory, hazardous chemicals, preventative maintenance and other essential documentation.
- Safety responsibilities for grounds, buildings, athletic fields/tracks/courts, public passageways, playgrounds, district vehicles and parking lots.
- Daily operate a pick-up truck or other vehicle to get to and from assigned areas in the District.
- May perform general cleaning or other maintenance duties at the direction of the Director of Facilities Management.
- On an occasional basis, may be asked to substitute in other buildings and carry out assigned duties.
General Labor:
Responsibilities within this job category usually contain heavy, manual labor tasks. Although these responsibilities are varied and can occur on an irregular basis, individuals in this category will be expected to carry out the assigned tasks. The following represents a sampling of duties and does not imply a complete listing.
- Tear out and repair concrete on sidewalks and driveways.
- Tear out and repair asphalt on parking lots and playgrounds.
- Move furniture, equipment and machinery such as desks, food service equipment and other items (which could be in excess of 500 lbs.).
- Reset and/or realign heavy equipment/machinery (weight can exceed 1000 lbs).
- Perform other duties as the need arises.
