Job Description

Parks, Recreation and Tourism is seeking a motivated, outgoing individual that enjoys working outside and can provide exemplary customer service.

Grounds Maintenance team promotes and improves the appearance and safety of the City's outdoor areas including trails, parks, recreation and municipal facilities, landscaping, athletic fields, open space, and various other outdoor sites within the City. This position will assist with Trail maintenance, landscaping, mowing, tree work and repair and construction of facility grounds, in addition to supporting city-wide special event logistics.

Overall primary tasks include but are not limited to:

  • Provides exceptional internal and external customer service to a diverse population; responds to requests for services and inquires, as directed by supervisor that meets the expectations of the City's Customer Service and CARES Initiative.
  • Operates various commercial lawn and garden equipment, tractor, chain saw, pole saw, sprayer, City vehicles, common hand and power tools.
  • Maintains trails, trees, landscaping, grounds, sidewalks, fixtures, fences, playgrounds, shorelines, ballfields and parking lots surrounding all City facilities.
  • Performs responsible skilled and semi-skilled work in repair, maintenance and care of grounds, trails, trees, equipment, irrigation systems, recreation facilities and structures.
  • Provides logistical support for City sponsored functions and special events; set-up and breakdown tents, fencing, barricades, trash disposal
  • Custodial duties to include cleaning bathrooms, floors, etc. as well as stocking with supplies. Cleans and removes trash and debris from outdoor sites.
  • Monitors and inspects areas for safety hazards and repairs;
  • Submits work order request, maintains related forms and records. Assists with completing and maintaining various routine forms and documents.

Required Qualifications

VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT:

Requires sufficient instruction to perform duties or high school diploma/GED/HSE, depending on department.

EXPERIENCE:

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:

Requires a valid driver's license and a driving record that is in compliance with the City Driving Standards. Ability to obtain a pesticide certification within 6 months of employment.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:

Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Emergency operations support work and work locations may be outside of normal job duties.

Preferred Qualifications

Previous customer service experience.

Previous work experience in landscaping, trail maintenance, tree pruning and removal, mowing, and/or facility operations and equipment. Knowledgeable of methods, tools and equipment used in the repair and general maintenance of grounds and facilities.

Understands and follows written and oral instructions, document necessary information for completion of work orders, event schedules, material expenditures and other related documentation.

Possession of, or ability to obtain Pesticide Applicators Certification within the probation period.
