Position Information

Title Half (.5) Graduate Assistant - College of Humanities and Social Sciences, Dean's Office Position Description

The Half (.5) Graduate Assistant (GA) will work 10 hours per week and receive up to 15 credits of tuition and student fee waivers: 6 for fall, 6 for spring and 3 for summer.

Overview and Responsibilities:

This .5 GA position will be the point of contact for the newly created Paid Participant Research Pool supported via the Dean's Office of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. The .5 GA will report to Dr. Melissa Brandon in Psychology and the QuAC Coordinator, who spent this academic year establishing the pool in consultation with the IRB. The .5 GA position will provide a graduate student with valuable experience in recruitment for human-subject research, which is directly applicable to any social scientist career, especially regarding ethical research recruitment practices.

The .5 GA position includes the responsibility of ensuring all researchers that submit studies for the pool have approved IRBs, evidence of ethics training, and proof of funding to compensate participants. The pool is run through the secure, web, database software of SONA. The .5 GA will be the official administrator who approves studies to be granted recruitment hours and ensures volunteer participants are enrolling easily to participate. The faculty advisor will train the .5 GA on the use of SONA and the established standards for the use of the paid research pool.

The .5 GA will also be asked to complete the national ethics training for working with human research participants (CITI training certificate) to provide a background in ethical recruitment of human participants. If the graduate student has already completed the CITI training for their own research, the certificate of completion from within the last three years will be accepted.

The .5 GA will also help recruit researchers and participants for the pool across the whole university. For example, the .5 GA will plan and hold recruitment and information sessions with the help of the faculty advisor for interested departments and campus groups. The .5 GA will monitor the first year of operations of the pool, including trouble shooting practical operational problems that arise and revising instructions as needed for ease of operation. The .5 GA and the faculty advisor will use the data from the first year of operations to help plan for future longevity of the paid pool.

The .5 GA will meet weekly with the faculty advisor to answer any questions and plan ethical recruitment across campus that targets the full diversity of BSU. We hope that this paid participant research pool will be an asset to the University's researchers who collect human-subject data including graduate students. The .5 GA will have workspace available in the Psychology lab in Moakley so that they have ease of access to their faculty advisor.

Preferred Qualifications

Qualifications

The graduate student who fills this position should have some experience conducting human-subject research either in their current graduate studies or during their undergraduate studies. This insight will make it easier to understand the needs of the researchers and participants using this recruitment system.

Experience with the SONA recruitment system is ideal, but the software is easy to use and learn. Experience recruiting participants for research will be the most useful knowledge base for understanding of the necessity of ethics being placed at the forefront of the process.

The .5 GA should be comfortable with in-person and email communication as they will be the point of contact for the paid pool. The .5 GA should also have good public speaking abilities to help recruit a diverse group of participants and researchers to be part of this pool.

Physical Demands

Physical Demands

The .5 GA will be asked to visit departments and graduate programs across campus to inform them about the paid pool and post flyers, therefore, the ability to get around campus buildings is needed.

The .5 GA will also work at a computer station when administering the SONA pool.
