Position Information

Title Half (.5) Graduate Assistant - English, Writing Program Administration (WPA) Position Description

The Half (.5) Graduate Assistant (GA) will work 10 hours per week and receive up to 15 credits of tuition and student fee waivers: 6 for fall, 6 for spring and 3 for summer.

Overview and Duties

The graduate student would be supporting Dr. Joyce Rain Anderson and Dr. Lisa Litterio, Writing Program Administrators (WPAs). The coordinators oversee the university's robust first year writing program, which consists of Enhanced 101 courses and ENGL 101 (Writing Rhetorically) and ENGL 102 (Writing Rhetorically with Sources).

The graduate student would be responsible for developing a repository of online and web-based materials that focus on pedagogical practices for supporting faculty in teaching first year writing. The graduate student would also research and examine best practices relating to large language models (LLMs) and writing; this is particularly pertinent given campus-wide discussions regarding AI. There would also be some professional development opportunities, such as helping to secure external speakers well versed in AI and writing practices.

The WPA program also involves overseeing writing fellows, who provide extra support to students in the Enhanced 101 English sections. The graduate assistant would support the writing fellows with dedicated offi ce hours, approving weekly timesheets, and developing programming relating to pedagogical issues. We are also open to the graduate student creating social media posts relating to first-year writing practices as well as pursuing their own research interests in this position.
