Position Information

Title Half (.5) Graduate Assistant - Massachusetts Aggression Reduction Center (MARC) Position Description

The Half Graduate Assistant (.5 GA) will work 10 hours per week and receive up to 15 credits of tuition and student fee waivers: 6 for fall, 6 for spring and 3 for summer.

Overview

The MARC graduate assistantship emphasizes both working closely with a supervisor but also learning how to develop relationships with many individuals who are both researchers and educators in Massachusetts. This graduate assistant will be strongly encouraged to push their professional limits by presenting at national and international conferences, and by developing their professional communication skills. They will be expected to learn how to think and function as scientific consumers, research producers, and professional trainers. They will assist in teaching undergraduate students and are expected to develop their intellectual capacity accordingly.

This position requires a professional interest in violence and abuse, which may be one of the most pervasive and damaging forms of social injustice. The entire mission of the Massachusetts Aggression Reduction Center is to reduce aggression and abuse, and our graduate assistants learn the power of working to defeat such problems.

Duties

Responsibilities and duties will include traveling to various school districts all over Massachusetts to train students in cyberbullying and bullying awareness. These trainings include both assembly presentations and peer leadership training. In the assembly presentations a PowerPoint presentation is used in combination with student discussion. Innovative, interactive zoom assemblies have also been developed, with GA help. Peer leadership training will be performed in a smaller group setting where students will learn the skills needed to be a peer leader in his or her own school.

Assisting in the supervision of undergraduate students enrolled in MARC will also be a responsibility. This will entail interviewing undergraduate candidates, attending class meetings, engaging on discussion boards, and working with other students on projects. Finally, these graduate assistants will collaborate in research, assist with undergraduate research, and present at local, national, and/or international conferences.

Preferred Qualifications

Qualifications

Skills for this job include public speaking, and the ability to effectively reach out to students during school presentations and facilitations. Familiarization and use of PowerPoint is required for school presentations; other basic technology skills must include using Zoom, and/or Google scholar, or the willingness to learn these. Second year graduate students, or students with some similar work or internship experiences, are preferred.

Leadership abilities will be utilized when working with undergraduate students and coordinating various MARC events. The MARC graduate assistant will study, research, and present on diverse cultural viewpoints and violence prevention, and will hone his or her intellectual development. In addition, significant organizational skills and punctual timeliness are required for this position. An interest in violence prevention is also necessary.
