Position Information

Title Half (.5) Graduate Assistant - Public Relations, MA Position Description

The Half Graduate Assistant (.5 GA) will work 10 hours per week and receive up to 15 credits of tuition and student fee waivers: 6 for fall, 6 for spring and 3 for summer.

Overview

The Graduate Assistant for Public Relations will support the development, promotion, and visibility of the MA in Public Relations program. This position provides hands-on, applied experience in strategic communication, digital content creation, and integrated marketing within a higher education setting. The GA will contribute to high-impact communication initiatives that align with university priorities, including graduate enrollment growth, program visibility, and engagement with internal and external audiences.

Responsibilities/Duties:

  • Content Development and Strategic Writing

  • Write and edit news releases, feature stories, blog posts, and program content; develop audience-focused messaging and maintain consistent brand positioning

  • Digital Media and Content Creation

  • Create written, visual, and multimedia assets to support marketing eff orts using tools such as Canva or Adobe Creative Suite

  • Social Media Strategy and Management

  • Assist in managing social media channels, develop and schedule content, and monitor engagement to improve reach and effectiveness

  • Program Promotion and Event Support

  • Support recruitment and promotional events, including development of communication materials and follow-up outreach

  • Research and Strategic Insights

  • Conduct research on industry trends and provide insights to inform content strategy and program positioning

  • Collaboration and Project Coordination

  • Work with faculty, MarCOMM, and campus partners to support communication projects and timelines

Outcomes

Through this position, the GA will:

  • Develop advanced skills in strategic writing and professional communication
  • Gain experience in integrated marketing and digital media strategy
  • Build a portfolio of real-world communication deliverables (content, campaigns, multimedia assets)
  • Strengthen skills in audience analysis, branding, and message development
  • Apply communication theory to practical, high-impact projects
  • Enhance career readiness for roles in public relations, marketing, nonprofit leadership, and management (MBA/MPA pathways)

Preferred Qualifications

Qualifications

  • Strong writing, editing, and communication skills
  • Interest in public relations, marketing, or strategic communication
  • Familiarity with social media platforms and digital content creation
  • Experience with tools such as Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, or similar
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
