Pay Grade: 111

Annual Salary Range: $62,700 - $92,500

The successful candidates placement in the salary range will depend upon previous experience in a similar role.

DESCRIPTION / ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

This position supports operations of the Household Products Collection Center (HPCC), provides technical expertise and coordinates with various city departments regarding the handling, storage and disposal of hazardous waste (hazardous, non-hazardous and universal) for all City facilities.

Duties include, but are not limited to the following

  • Manages the daily operation of the HPCC facility.
  • Ensure City facilities comply with federal, state and local rules, regulations and best practices related to hazardous and non-hazardous waste collection and disposal.
  • Respond to internal and external stakeholder concerns related to hazardous and non-hazardous waste and provide effective customer support.
  • Collect and coordinate waste shipments for HPCC and Tempe facilities.
  • Develop and update regulatory reporting and tracking forms as required.
  • Oversee activities of contractors and vendors operating at the HPCC and Zero Waste Day Events.
  • Inspects infrastructure at City facilities to ensure compliance with the Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System permit.
  • May perform responsibilities of a similar nature and level as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS

Experience:

Three (3) years of experience in safety and hazardous material handling or related experience.

Candidates must have the minimum amount of work experience. Years of experience are based upon a full-time work schedule (2,080 hours per year). The sum of an applicants full-time and/or part-time qualifying work experience must meet or exceed the stated minimum qualification. Education will not substitute for the required work experience; however, related unpaid and/or volunteer work experience may be used as qualifying work experience.

Education:

High school diploma or GED.

Professional Licensure and/or Certifications:

  • Valid Drivers License
  • OSHA mandated - Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) Certification, obtain within one (1) year of hire.

Additional Requirements Required to Pass

  • US EPA Resource Conservation & Recovery Act (RCRA) Waste management training, complete within six (6) months of hire.
  • USDOT 49 CFR Transportation of Hazardous Material training, complete within six (6) months of hire.
