Position Summary
We are seeking a qualified and detail-oriented Hazardous Waste Worker (also known as a hazardous materials technician or specialist) to join our team in Laurel, MD. This position plays a crucial role in ensuring that the client spaces are meticulously cleaned and free of lead dust. Your work will directly minimize the risks associated with lead dust exposure, protecting both public health and the environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead Dust Abatement: Use specialized de-leading solutions and HEPA-grade vacuums to thoroughly clean all horizontal and vertical surfaces throughout each firing range, weapons cleaning area, and staff break room.
- Containment setup: Set up and maintain proper lead dust containment barriers and practices when performing required deep cleans.
- Range Maintenance: Clean, sweep, and collect bullet casings from inside each facility and range. Safely deposit collected casings into designated collection containers located nearby.
- HAZMAT Handling & Disposal: Safely handle, package, label, and transport hazardous materials, specifically lead dust and associated contaminated debris, according to established safety protocols and regulatory requirements.
- Safety & PPE Compliance: Adhere strictly to safety guidelines to prevent personal exposure and cross-contamination. This includes the proper use and maintenance of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), practicing rigorous personal hygiene, and actively participating in safety training programs.
- Material & Equipment Transport: Safely operate pickup trucks to pick up and transport materials from suppliers. Drive and operate a forklift to move materials and supplies between shops, storage facilities, and active job sites.
- Site Support: Assist with the mobilization and demobilization of equipment into and out of job sites, and maintain overall general site cleanliness.
- Continuous Improvement: Stay current on industry best practices and advancements in hazardous materials management. Provide guidance and peer-to-peer training to coworkers on safe handling and disposal practices.
- Perform other facility-related duties as required.
Qualifications and Skills
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent (additional education or specialized certifications in hazardous materials management are highly desirable).
- Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of hazardous materials classifications, labeling, safety data sheets (SDS), and storage requirements.
- Certifications:
- Ability to obtain Forklift certification.
- Ability to obtain HAZMAT certification for waste storage, and cleanup at job sites.
- Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
- Comfort climbing stairs and ladders, operating small hand tools, and assisting coworkers with safety-related physical tasks.
- Physical fitness and ability to work in potentially hazardous conditions (e.g., confined spaces, exposure to lead dust, fumes, or chemicals).
- Ability to comfortably conduct work while wearing respirators and Tyvek suits/coveralls.
- Requirements:
- Must possess a valid driver's license and be comfortable driving pickup trucks.
- Must be a U.S. citizen (required for facility access).
- Must be able to successfully pass a federal security clearance investigation.
