Hazmat Responder
We are seeking dedicated Full-Time HazMat and/or Confined Space Technicians and Specialists to join our emergency response team. This role involves performing hazardous materials response, cleanup, and mitigation activities in accordance with OSHA 29 CFR 1910.120 (HAZWOPER), as well as confined space rescue operations per OSHA 29 CFR 1910.146. Fire department or HazMat team experience is highly preferred.
Job Overview as a HazMat Emergency Responder, you will play a vital role in protecting public health, safety, the environment, and personnel during hazardous materials incidents involving chemical, biological, radiological, or other hazardous substances. This full-time position combines scheduled work with flexible on-call availability for emergency responses.
Primary Responsibilities: • Rapidly respond to hazardous materials incidents, assess situations, and implement containment, mitigation, and cleanup procedures. • Identify hazardous materials, evaluate risks, and apply appropriate response protocols. • Operate specialized equipment, including personal protective equipment (PPE up to Level A), detection/monitoring devices, decontamination systems, and rescue gear (e.g., confined space harnesses, structural firefighter gear). • Perform industrial cleaning, decontamination of personnel, equipment, and affected areas to minimize hazardous exposure. • Conduct confined space entries and rescue standby as needed. • Adhere strictly to federal, state, and local regulations, including OSHA, EPA, and company safety/environmental guidelines. • Participate in regular training, drills, exercises, and online courses to maintain certifications and readiness. • Document incidents accurately, including response actions, materials involved, and outcomes for compliance and reporting. • Collaborate with fire departments, law enforcement, EMS, environmental agencies, and other stakeholders during emergencies. • Work in diverse and challenging environments (industrial sites, highways, urban/rural areas), including extreme temperatures, confined spaces, and hazardous atmospheres. • Maintain a constant state of alertness, operate safely under high stress, and follow the employee handbook. • Keep equipment in ready condition and perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Requirements: • High school diploma or equivalent (required). • Valid drivers license (required); CDL with HAZMAT endorsement preferred. • HAZWOPER certification (40-hour minimum, or willingness to obtain) highly preferred; NFPA 472/1072 (Operations or Technician level) a plus. • Experience in emergency response, hazardous materials handling, confined space operations, or related field preferred. • Strong knowledge of hazardous material properties, containment strategies, and safety protocols is advantageous. • Ability to remain calm, make sound decisions, and perform under high-stress conditions. • Excellent physical fitness to wear heavy PPE for extended periods, work in confined spaces, and handle demanding tasks. • Strong communication, teamwork, and interpersonal skills. • Commitment to ongoing training and compliance with all safety standards.
