HDD (Horizontal Directional Drilling) Inspector in Danville, VA area (for projects located in North Carolina and Virginia)
- $1,200–$1,350/day plus expenses
- Contract role, on-site
- Daily travel between project sites required
We're seeking an experienced HDD (Horizontal Directional Drilling) Inspector to serve as the owner's representative during pipeline construction activities across two project sites located approximately 20 miles apart in North Carolina and Virginia. This role is critical to ensuring drilling operations are executed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with engineering designs, environmental requirements, and project standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Monitor HDD contractors throughout all phases of drilling operations to ensure compliance with approved plans and specifications
- Enforce OSHA regulations and project-specific safety requirements while promoting a strong safety culture in the field
- Participate in daily Job Safety Analysis (JSA) meetings and safety discussions
- Track drilling performance metrics, including rates of penetration, steering corrections, drilling fluid properties, and equipment conditions
- Review and verify adherence to approved bore paths and engineering designs
- Complete and maintain HDD inspection reports, drilling fluid logs, steering logs, and daily construction documentation
- Identify and communicate potential environmental, safety, or operational concerns before they impact project execution
- Serve as the primary liaison between the construction management team and drilling contractors
- Monitor contractor performance and ensure compliance with project quality standards and regulatory requirements
- Support successful project execution through proactive communication and issue resolution
Required Qualifications:
- API 1169 Pipeline Construction Inspector certification
- Previous experience inspecting HDD operations, pipeline construction, or midstream infrastructure projects
- Strong understanding of drilling operations, bore path monitoring, and drilling fluid management
- Experience working in active construction environments with multiple stakeholders
- Knowledge of OSHA regulations, environmental compliance requirements, and pipeline construction standards
- Strong documentation, reporting, and communication skills
- Ability to work independently in a field-based environment while managing multiple priorities
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience supporting natural gas transmission, gathering, or midstream pipeline projects
- Prior experience serving as an owner's representative or third-party inspector
- Familiarity with utility crossings, environmental compliance monitoring, and construction quality assurance processes
- Strong working knowledge of HDD steering systems, drilling fluid programs, and construction best practices
