Job Summary

This position is responsible for all aspects of a successful intercollegiate bowling program, including recruiting talented student-athletes academically and athletically, ensuring compliance with institutional, SWAC, and NCAA Division I guidelines and regulations, and supporting student-athlete academic success.

Additionally, this position serves as Director of the Bowling Center and Recreation Engagement Coordinator, overseeing daily operations of the Student Union Bowling Alley, including facility management, student staffing, programming, revenue generation, equipment maintenance, scheduling, and customer service to ensure a safe, profitable, student-centered, and engaging recreational environment.

The Bowling Center operational functions, programming, scheduling, and revenue-generating activities shall report directly to the Director of Campus Activities & Student Engagement, ensuring the facility remains a student union asset serving the broader campus community beyond athletic team use.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

Athletic Program Leadership

  • Manages and directs the Bowling Program
  • Develop team and individual strategies to maximize competitive success through instruction, match preparation, and video analysis
  • Design instructional programs for the team and individual student-athletes and implement game plans for competition
  • Travel to events and evaluate prospective student-athlete talent; correspond with prospects via email, phone, and face-to-face meetings
  • Complete all necessary compliance and institutional documentation as required
  • Recruit student-athletes who meet University academic and athletic standards
  • Promote the program to media, donors, alumni, the University community, and the public to increase visibility and program revenue
  • Maintain a competitive schedule that prepares the team for conference and postseason success

Compliance, Academic Success & Academic Advisor Responsibilities

  • Responsible for overall student-athlete academic progress by working closely with academic support staff
  • Work with the NCAA Compliance Office to ensure compliance with all institutional, conference, and NCAA regulations
  • Enable student-athletes requiring academic assistance to develop academic strategies, discipline, and success plans
  • Direct students to University resources for tutoring, advising, academic major selection, and career planning
  • Provide orientation and training regarding academic programs, policies, and procedures
  • Make appropriate work assignments and evaluate academic progress
  • Contribute to the overall success of the academic process and student-athlete retention

Bowling Center Facility Operations

Reports directly to the Director of Campus Activities & Student Engagement for all operational matters

  • Oversee the daily operations of the Student Union Bowling Alley •
  • Assist with facility opening, closing, scheduling, lane usage, and equipment maintenance coordination •
  • Supervise Bowling Graduate Assistants, interns, student managers, and student employees assigned to the facility •
  • Ensure the bowling alley remains accessible for general student recreation, evening programming, and weekend engagement opportunities •
  • Promote a safe, welcoming, and student-centered environment •
  • Participate in operational planning meetings with Campus Activities & Student Engagement staff •
  • Participate in monthly operational review meetings regarding scheduling, programming, student usage, and facility performance

Student Engagement & Programming

Reports directly to the Director of Campus Activities & Student Engagement

  • Support the development and execution of a minimum of 2-3 student engagement programs monthly, including tournaments, themed nights, glow bowling, faculty/staff leagues, and student organization partnerships
  • Collaborate with FSUB, Student Organizations, Greek Life, Residence Life, Student Government Association, and Campus Activities staff to activate the space
  • Assist in maintaining evening and weekend programming as a priority for student engagement and campus life •
  • Support student leadership development through mentorship and engagement opportunities

Revenue Generation & Budget Management

Reports directly to the Director of Campus Activities & Student Engagement for Bowling Center revenue initiatives

  • Responsible for successfully managing the athletic program's annual budget, including fiscal planning and sport budget management
  • Support revenue-generating initiatives including student leagues, tournaments, faculty/staff events, alumni engagement, community partnerships, youth clinics, and approved facility rentals
  • Assist with financial planning, pricing structures, and sustainable revenue generation for bowling alley operations
  • Promote responsible facility utilization to maximize engagement and long-term sustainability

Additional Responsibilities

  • Maintain strong collaboration between Athletics and Campus Life to support shared use of the facility
  • Ensure the bowling alley remains a Student Union asset first, serving the broader campus community
  • Perform any other duties assigned by the Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics and/or the Director of Campus Activities & Student Engagement

Qualifications

Minimum:

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • One to five years of coaching experience at the collegiate, high school, or recreational league level
  • Ability to work effectively with all collegiate personnel, students, alumni, and community stakeholders
  • Must be knowledgeable of NCAA rules and regulations
  • Effective written and oral communication skills
  • Sound judgment, maturity, and leadership ability
  • Experience in student engagement, recreation management, or facility operations

Preferred:

  • Sound judgment and maturity
  • Previous experience managing a bowling facility
  • Previous experience in intercollegiate athletics
  • Experience in student programming and event coordination
  • Experience supervising student employees and revenue-generating recreational operations
