Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • One (1) year of custodial experience in industrial/commercial work.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Three (3) years of custodial experience in industrial/commercial work.
Relevant work experience or education may be substituted to satisfy minimum qualifications.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

    • Clear and concise oral and written communication skills; organizational and management skills; mathematical skills.
    • Knowledge of pertinent regulations, policies, and procedures for the functional area of assignment.
    • Knowledge of HIPAA, Public Records, Sunshine Law, FERPA, and other laws/regulations related to student and employee privacy, public information, and records retention.
    • Knowledge of and experience with industry-standard equipment, materials, chemicals, practices, computers, and applications.
    • Ability to professionally and effectively respond to customer needs and requests for service or assistance.
    • Ability to work extended hours, weekends, and be on call for emergencies 24 hours per day to provide coverage during the absence of the Building Supervisor.
    • Ability to communicate and work effectively with diverse groups of people.
    • Ability to train and coordinate custodians in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale.

    Responsibilities

    • Acting as a team leader, assist in planning and assigning the work of custodial personnel in cleaning, occasional landscaping, and performing minor maintenance and repair of buildings, facilities, grounds, and premises.
    • Lead the cleaning operations such as sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, waxing, buffing, and stripping wax from floors; vacuuming and shampooing carpets, dusting/polishing furniture, removing mildew, and replacing supplies as directed.
    • Share knowledge of all authorized District chemicals used in routine cleaning procedures.
    • Inspect cleaning operations and security procedures for compliance with District standards; lead custodians in making necessary adjustments/changes and any necessary corrections.
    • Train employees in required duties and procedures.
    • Report long-standing issues to designated supervisor.
    • Maintain required records, prepare simple reports, and requisition supplies.
    • Complete safety checks verifying Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requirements.
    • Provide minor lawn care, cut/trim small areas of grass, trim hedges, and sweep and clean walks; maintain lawn equipment; and assist in keeping outside premises in an orderly condition.
    • Clean assigned areas and take care that certain papers and materials are not misplaced or destroyed.
    • Comply with applicable safety regulations and procedures.
    • Request assistance as needed when lifting/moving heavy and/or awkward objects.
    • Complete minor electrical repairs including replacing fluorescent ballasts.
    • Check the chiller/air handler operation and change air conditioning filters when necessary.
    • Utilize basic District computer applications for communication, training, and record keeping.
    • Contact appropriate resources when responding to building alarm calls after hours or emergency conditions.
    • Move furniture/equipment, clean clay trap in art rooms, and deliver supplies.
    • In kitchen areas, conduct, clean, inspect, and perform minor maintenance on air conditioning vents; ductwork; fans on walls, ceilings, coolers, and freezers; lights and enclosures in exhaust hoods, coolers, freezers, warmers, and ceilings; and exposed motors and wires on backs of ovens; replace bulbs when needed.
    • Assume the responsibilities of the Building Supervisor when the Building Supervisor is absent.
